Fight for your right to listen to fist-pumping, guitar-crunching metal, my friends. And you'll find it here on the only release from Fortuner. When listening to this album, I can't really take into consideration how it was received in 1986. Maybe it sounded too much like other metal bands of the time to really get much attention, or maybe it was poor marketing, who knows? All I can say is that listening to it in 2009 and being a fan of old-school traditional metal, it fully delivers the goods.
That being said, what can I really say about this album, given that it's the sole release of the band? It's just about as straightforward as you can get when it comes to '80s metal, but that's not to say it doesn't have plenty to offer on its own. They just don't make this kind of music anymore. Each and every song has its own catchy riffs, excellent solos, and the vocals are top-notch as well.
The real problem with obscure bands like this is that when you listen to most of their albums the songs sort of sound the cool but the same as well. Not so with Fortuner. I really dug this album start to finish. Every song is a highlight and of course it depends on your own personal taste, but if you enjoy catchy, melodic, guitar-driven metal, then you should definitely pick this up should you come across it. It also comes along with a sweet medium-paced ballad in "I'm Comin' Home"
It's nothing mindblowing, but I felt that this album should at least have one review. It's good enough to recommend. I would love to have seen what Fortuner could have done with further albums. Alas, we will never know, but even though they may be mired in obscurity, Two Sides of the Metal is a great little legacy to leave behind.by Zack2981, metal-archives.com
