    Folkearth is an extensive international collective; consequently they have an opulence of ideas. Every year they release one or two albums. ‘Sons Of The North’ is already the ninth album we receive to review. Unfortunately not all their albums are high quality stuff, but with this piece of work – released in April 2011 – they took a step forward in the right direction. Firstly it has a better production and secondly ‘Sons Of The North’ sounds much heavier.

    Fifteen musicians from ten different countries contributed to this record, newcomers as well as ancients. The Greek Marios Koutsoukos remains the main man for the lyrics about Viking themes, while music was composed by Michael Fiori from Monaco (he has a juicy grunt style), Gianluca Tamburini from Italy (for the more folk-like stuff) and Jaco from Poland. The album kicks off fine with the title track: inciting black metal in which folk melodies on authentic instruments like accordion and cello flutter through, although it sounds like inspired by Amon Amarth. In addition to the harsh grunts, we also have Viking chants and a bit female vocals. ‘Riders On The Winds’ is black metal relished with a vivid violin. In the melodic, folky ‘Taking Arms’ things get worse with weak clean vocals and corny ethnic chants. Unfortunately it remains a bit chaotic from time to time, listen to ‘Wind Of Conquest’. A bit melancholy belongs to the genre, illustrated by the beginning of ‘Ravens On The Wing’. Most of the songs are rather heavy, but the folkloristic ‘Black Knights’ includes a fine semi-acoustic ending. Nevertheless I have the impression that the best songs are situated in the beginning. But we have reviewed worse albums from Folkearth. The magnificent artwork was – as always – done by Kris Verwimp.
