The Clemenza di Tito, which goes back to an original libretto by Pietro Metastasio, known even the educated music lover in general only in the version of Mozart (1791), which represents a late culmination of the genus Opera seria. The material was particularly popular in the Age of Enlightenment, no less than 46 different versions are known, some come from greats of the musical life of the time such as Hasse, Gluck, Jommelli, Traetta, Anfossi and Myslivecek. Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785) was already a mature man and highly respected composer when he created his version for the Venice carnival season in 1760. It was his 65th opera, but there is no sign of fatigue in the score.
Unlike Mozart, who had the Metastasio text of Caterino Mazzolà thoroughly redesigned, replacing many arias and recitatives with dramatically pulsating ensembles, Galuppi followed - with some discrepancies - the original. This is astonishing insofar as he was a groundbreaking innovator in the field of opera buffa, who can be regarded as a direct forerunner of Mozart with his extensive "chain finali".
But playing Mozart in the case of Tito against Galuppi would be unfair, because the Italian works with great ingenuity on the endless loop of recitatives and Dacapo arias, without drifting into pure craftsmanship or even formulaic. On the contrary, his musical ingenuity is almost inexhaustible, he knows how to characterize characters and situations individually, especially in the arias of Vitellia and Sesto, and to make their feelings and actions dramatically plausible, assigning a significant role to each accompanying solo instrument ,
Fabio Pirona, who has already played several Galuppi operas with the Savaria Baroque Orchestra playing on original instruments (so that one can already speak of a cycle), makes music again on this occasion with warmth and the necessary smoothness, with great attention to detail.–Ekkehard Pluta
