His big band is special in that, in addition to five reeds and a rhythm section, it has four, rather than eight, brass. “This combination of instruments gives the band the flexibility of a small group along with the power of a big band.” His 14-piece band is filled with superior soloists who blend together effortlessly to achieve an identifiable group sound. But most impressive is Eyal’s writing, which often voices the horns in inspired ways. He integrates individual lyrical lines for the musicians and harmonizes the horns in unique combinations, mixing together the different sections to create colorful and special sounds that are filled with surprises.
During the past few years, the Eyal Vilner Big Band has been busy performing around the New York City scene, including at Sweet Rhythm, Smalls, Iridium, Fat Cat, and the Garage. After performing a week at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, the band was ready to make its recording debut.
The band shows true understanding and respect to the tradition of jazz music while adding an interesting individual twist to it. This impressive debut album by one of New York’s most exiting new groups certainly puts the Eyal Vilner Big Band on the map.
