When a big band splits, it mostly is just a question of time until at least a part of the musicians re-surfaces either in other bands or solo. In these cases it usually is helpful, if you already had a solo career before that split, but very successful band, so that it is not completely new territory for you. The band I am talking about is MR.BIG, the musician Eric Martin and here comes his latest solo album, titled "Destroy All Monsters", and who knows his newer solo works already knows what awaits you.
He as been a productive fellow all the time and it's been just a few months since his acoustic album "Pure", but acoustically we get something different here. Relaxed Hard Rock, earthy, catchy and with Eric Martin's characteristic voice, divided into twelve Tracks, here and there with a few light Modern Rock quotes, but altogether staying pretty true to his style.
That the guitars don't play a secondary role only is taken care of by six different guitarists, I know, doesn't have to mean anything, but in this case it is a guarantor that nothing stays stuck in the plush. Among the guest musicians we have some pretty well known folks, for example the LITTLE FEAT members Kenny Gradney (bass), Bill Payne (keyboards) and Richie Hayward (drums) or NIGHT RANGER guitarist Jeff Watson. The opener "What's The Worst That Can Happen" is the first proof for my guitar melody, while the following "Kansas" is a loose Melodic Rocker.
On "Janie Won't Open" we get a slightly more modern edge and the ballad "You're Too Good For Him" with its Spanish guitars and the Reggae excursion (!) "I Can Die Now" also show that even though Eric does not do any experiments on "Destroy All Monsters", he still throws in quite some variation.
Metal this is not, for sure, but who like to pop in a catchy Hard Rock album every now and then, should note down Eric Martin's newest, good melodies, good drive and all of that in a really good production, thumbs up!~ metal-observer.com
