What few people realise is that the band could have been called HELP as Jimi Hendrix was slated to join before his untimely death stopped the collaboration. In four years in the early 70s they sold nearly 50 million albums and today still have a worldwide fan base which numbers in the hundreds of thousands.
ELP promised a show that brings back the same theatrics that the highly creative and unsurpassable combination of Keith Emerson's legendary keyboards, Greg Lake's extraordinary voice, and the dramatic drumming of Carl Palmer to their core fan base and to the new generation that hails the musical and technical virtuosity that ELP delivered at every performance, and recorded in every album.

KEITH EMERSON
Hailed as a keyboard legend, Keith Emerson has been one of the most important figures to emerge from the thriving UK rock scene of the 1960's and 70's. He is known as one of the most prominent leaders in the progressive rock movement, fusing rock 'n' roll with a myriad of musical styles, such as classical, jazz and world music. A modern wizard of electronic and acoustic keyboards, most notably the organ and synthesizer, he has set a standard by which others multiply. With both "The Nice" and "Emerson, Lake & Palmer," Emerson has written and recorded some of rock's most adventurous music and brought it to the masses with unmatched virtuosity and skillful showmanship.
Born November 2,1944 in Todmorden, Lancashire, England, Keith Emerson soon became a piano sensation in his hometown of Worthing, Sussex by the time he was fourteen years old. In his late teens, he moved to London, joined the band "V.I.P.'s" and later "Gary Farr and the T-Bones," backing their mentor T-Bone Walker at the Marquee Club in London, also touring Germany, France and the UK. Some of his early influences were jazz artists Fats Waller, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Jack McDuff and Big John Patton. Classical composers also became influential to his music including J.S. Bach, Aaron Copland, Demetri Shostokovich, Bela Bartok and Alberto Ginestera amongst others.
In his twenties, he formed a band called "The Nice" with bassist/vocalist Lee Jackson, drummer Brian Davison and guitarist David O'List, which backed ex-Ike and Tina Turner's singer P.P. Arnold. The group struck out on it's own with a unique blend of classical, blues, jazz and rock. Emerson adopted the Hammond Organ as his instrument of choice during this period and soon gained fame for his outrageous stage antics and inspired musical performances., "The Nice" recorded numerous albums and appeared in a notorious concert at London's Royal Albert Hall. Immediately after hearing "Switched on Bach" by Walter Carlos, Emerson purchased and experimented with one of the first modular Moog Synthesizers and became the first artist to tour with "The Moog" internationally with the help of its inventor, Dr. Robert Moog.
In 1970, "The Nice" broke up and Emerson formed the legendary group, "Emerson, Lake & Palmer" (ELP) with bassist/vocalist Greg Lake and drummer Carl Palmer. They achieved instant fame with their debut at the Isle Of Wight Festival in 1970. The trio announced their arrival on the scene by tearing into a furious rock adaptation of Mussorgsky's classic "Pictures At An Exhibition", which concluded with a barrage of cannon fire.
Their first single, entitled "Lucky Man", from their debut album, "Emerson, Lake & Palmer", ended with a startling new sound, the lead Moog synthesizer solo. This sound took the world by storm, and the band was on its way. ELP released six platinum albums between 1970 and 1977, including "E, L & P," "Tarkus," "Trilogy", the cryptically entitled "Brain Salad Surgery", "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends" and "Works Vol. 1". They headlined the massive 1974 festival California Jam playing to an audience of over 200,000. Later in 1977, ELP toured with a handpicked orchestra, which performed Emerson's "Piano Concerto No.l".
After touring with the orchestra, ELP continued on the road as a trio, releasing two more albums "Works Vol. 2" and "Love Beach" before they disbanded in 1979.
Between 1985 and 1990, Emerson collaborated with Lake and Palmer in two separate efforts, "Emerson, Lake & Powell" and the band "3" respectively. In 1992, ELP reunited with the critically acclaimed "Black Moon". Subsequent world tours which resulted in the live performance releases of "Live at the Royal Albert Hall" in 1993 and "Then And Now" in 1999.
In 1980, Emerson issued his first solo album, a Caribbean island inspired work called "Honky". In addition, he recorded and released "The Christmas Album", displaying his own unique interpretation of many classic Christmas songs along with original seasonal pieces. Soon thereafter, he turned to motion picture soundtrack composition, producing several film scores between 1979 and 1989, including the orchestral score for Universal Studios feature release, Nighthawks", starring Sylvester Stallone and Billy Dee Williams and cult Italian horror master Dario Argento's "Inferno". Emerson also realized a full length Japanese animated film entitled "Harmagedon" in which he received a gold record for the main title theme, "Children Of The Light" sung by Rosemary Butler. Emerson also composed the music for Marvel Animation's cartoon action TV series, "Iron Man" in 1994.
Emerson went on to release the occasional collection of new material appearing on-stage. He even reunited with Nice band mates Brian Davison and Lee Jackson for a show in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2002 (Vivacitas). Along with the EMI classic release of the solo piano, "Emerson Plays Emerson" in the same year He penned an autobiography, "Pictures of an Exhibitionist" in 2003. He received the compilation treatment from Castle Records in 2005 with the two-disc "Hammer It Out: The Anthology". He toured in the USA, UK, Europe and Japan in 2004, 2005 & 2006 with his own "Keith Emerson Band", along with occasional collaborations with various orchestras in Naples, Italy and Beijing, China to promote the environmental issues. Always diverse in musical tastes, he sometimes sits in with jazz bands while encouraging others to take a safer road.
Throughout the years, Emerson has consistently won the Overall Best Keyboardist award in the annual Keyboard Magazine Readers' Poll, since the magazine debuted in 1975 and holds a seat of honour on their advisory board. He was recently honoured at The Smithsonian Institution, along with Dr. Robert Moog, for his pioneering work in electronic music. Emerson released the new album, Keith Emerson Band Featuring Marc Bonilla with regular collaborator Marc Bonilla and producer Keith Wechsler in mid 2008 worldwide, and toured Eastern Europe, Baltic, and Japan following the release.
In March 2010 Emerson received the prestigious Frankfurt Music Prize from the city of Frankfurt and in the same year embarked upon a duo tour of North America with Greg Lake as a prelude to ELP headlining the High Voltage Festival, London in July of the same year.
Emerson's Piano Concerto has now entered the classical repertoire with performances played by other prominent classical pianists and orchestras in Poland, Melbourne Australia.
In North America the great classical pianist Jeffrey Biegel has played the concerto many times, while the marching bands of America give his music another dynamic.
The premier performance of Emerson's orchestrated "Tarkus", arranged by Japanese classic composer, Takashi Yoshimatsu was performed by The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall on 14th March 2010 conducted by Sachio Fujioka and is now available on CD.
Emerson is now pursuing the orchestration of all his compositions old and new.
GREG LAKE
Vocalist, musician and producer, Greg Lake is one of the most prominent and popular musicians in the world and has often been described as having the voice of a generation.
He first won worldwide acclaim as lead vocalist, bass guitarist and producer when together with Robert Fripp he formed King Crimson. Their first album, In Court of the Crimson King, co-produced by Greg, featured the iconic song "21st Century Schizoid Man." King Crimson pioneered progressive rock and paved the way for famous bands that followed, including Yes and Genesis all the way through to bands such as The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and countless others.
Fripp and Lake met when they shared the same Dorset guitar teacher who taught an expansive range of music including classical pieces by Paganini and post war classics. Lake also listened to early American rock and roll and was inspired by everything he heard, from Elvis to classical.
Greg says "There is a common thread throughout all the music. The forms may be different, but each one to some degree draws upon inspiration from the past. I am as proud to have been as influenced by people like Elvis and Little Richard as I am by composers like Copeland and Prokofiev and I'm honoured when other musicians regard me as one of their inspirations."
Greg met fellow legend Keith Emerson during a North American tour where Emerson's band, The Nice shared the bill with King Crimson. The two shared common bonds: diverse musical influences and a desire to reinterpret classical works while creating new classics in a new musical genre. They also shared a perfectionist perspective which made them challenge each other and challenge the success and recognition they had previously achieved.
After returning to England Greg and Keith were introduced to Atomic Rooster drummer Carl Palmer, by Robert Stigwood, and very soon thereafter they formed Emerson Lake and Palmer.
The three created a unique live theatrical performance which stretched the imagination and enthralled audiences. One of their very first exceptional performances together was at the historic Isle of Wight Festival. That special concert propelled them on their path to become one of the world's first "Super Groups."
The 1971 debut album, Emerson Lake and Palmer went platinum. It was produced by Lake and featured a song Greg had written while still in school: "Lucky Man." "Lucky Man," performed on acoustic guitar, would become an iconic song for the band and a popular classic on radio.
"I am both a bass guitarist and guitarist," Greg explains. "A lot of the really good bass players also play guitar. McCartney and Sting for example both play guitar and I certainly grew up on it. But, because King Crimson didn't need two guitarists, I took over playing the bass."
In taking on the instrument, he also pioneered a new way of playing it. "I derived a great deal of enjoyment playing bass partly -1 think - because I played it in a different way from most people at the time. The style I developed was a more percussive and more sustained approach, which almost certainly came from all my years on guitar. I was frustrated by the normal dull sound of bass guitars at the time and was searching for a more expressive sound. I discovered the key was to use the wire wound bass strings, which have far more sustain, rather like the low end of a Steinway Grand Piano. I think I was the first bass player to really use them in this way."
However, it was the acoustic guitar that provided the setting for the ballads ELP and Lake became famous for. Lake wrote and sang: "C'est la vie" "From the Beginning," "Still You turn me On," "Watching Over You," "Lucky Man" and a song that would later be covered by Irish rockers U2, "I Believe in Father Christmas." He composed them, he says, so he could play the guitar with ELP and still contribute the electric bass that paired so well with Emerson's fiery keyboards and Palmer's explosive drums.
"I love acoustic guitars. They're delicate and light and yet at the same time are unbelievably powerful. They are really a strange instrument from that point of view, but there is something very special about them," he explains. "You just have to look at some of the truly great songs written on acoustic guitar - "Scarborough Fair," "Forever Young" "Yesterday" -truly iconic songs that all came from a small piece of wood with thin steel strings tied to each end."
The acoustics worked perfectly with Lake's "golden" voice, which Record Collector magazine calls "extraordinary, altering comfortably between angelic and magisterial."
Lake's remarkable voice also powered ELP's more electric pieces such as Karn Evil #9, one of the world's most beloved songs. The opening line "Welcome Back My Friends to the Show that Never Ends…" is an international favourite, globally used as a television theme.
To date Emerson Lake and Palmer has sold over 48 million records. Lake produced Tarkus, Pictures at an Exhibition, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery, Works Vol. 1 and 2, and two different live albums. All went platinum and featured a series of hit singles, most written and all sung by Greg, who credits their success to his constant search for perfection and his heart, two qualities he believes he shares with ELP keyboard luminary Keith Emerson.

It wasn't just the albums, it was the performances. The band filled arenas and stadiums in record breaking numbers. They toured the world with an enormous assembly of technicians, musicians and artists to realize their spellbinding shows.
The instrumental reworking of Aaron Copeland,'s Fanfare for the Common Man became the third bestselling instrumental track ever and still holds that honour. It became a showcase in live concerts for the band's theatrics as well as technical and creative abilities.
ELP's members focused on their solo careers in the eighties. They regrouped several times for wildly popular reunion tours. One reincarnation of ELP had Cozy Powell taking over drums for Carl Palmer, then on tour with Asia. Lake also joined Palmer in Asia, replacing John Wetton on vocals and guitars for one memorable performance broadcast worldwide from Japan.
Greg Lake has formed partnerships on stage, and off, in performances, writing, recording, and productions with musicians whose brilliance matches his own. Solo tours and recordings have been extremely successful as he continues to recreate hits, add to his vast repertoire and raise the bar for others in the industry.
His collaborations are many and impressive: Sheila E; Ringo Starr (joining Ringo Starr's All-Star Band to great acclaim and with great enjoyment); Led Zepplin's Robert Plant; The Who's Roger Daltrey (which led to a guest recording on a hit who single); and, Procol Harum's Gary Booker and Gary Moore. Greg has joined his friend Ian Anderson onstage with Jethro Tull and performed with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Most recently Greg worked with arranger, composer and keyboard artist David Arch (whose vast credentials include scoring and playing now-classic movies including three Harry Potter films,
Star Wars, Bridget Jones' Diary and Notting Hill).
Greg Lake is a formidable producer in his own right. He was one of the driving forces behind the now legendary Manticore Records, which he says, was built "with the noble ideal of helping other progressive artists, music we thought worth supporting, that weren't getting help from the majors."
Lake's inventive production shaped the best selling ELP albums and his solo work. As he continues to write and perform, he looks forward to new recordings and new tours.
He notes, "Finally, when I'm gone, I hope the songs live on and that I will be remembered for them. To be remembered for writing and performing would be an honour and a privilege." He is touched when cited as a muse by top young artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and when he finds ELP music being reinterpreted by other artists such as U2 and Sarah Brightman.
"From the Beginning" Greg Lake has led the way with extraordinary groundbreaking writing, performing and collaborations. The future holds more surprises.
CARL PALMER
Carl Frederick Kendall Palmer was born in Birmingham, England, on March 20th, 1950. From the beginning it was clear that music was in the stars for the young Carl Palmer. His grandfather played the drums, his grandmother was a symphony violinist, his mother played an assortment of instruments, and his father sang, danced and played the guitar and drums as a semi-professional entertainer.
Palmer recalled how he was influenced by a film he saw during these formative years. The 1959 film "Drum Crazy" (aka "The Gene Krupa Story") captured Carl's imagination and set him on his way — he was hooked. His biggest influences from that point forward were Krupa and drum legend Buddy Rich who would later become a close personal friend of Carl's.
Already a respected working drummer by 16, Palmer moved on to join Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds which also featured guitar great Albert Lee and keyboardist Dave Greenslade (later in Colosseum).
At the age of 18 Carl Palmer joined up with The Crazy World of Arthur Brown at the absolute peak of their success following the smash single "Fire" ("i am the God of Hellfire…"). Top 10 around the world Palmer arrived at a time when the band were touring with some of the biggest names in music. But it was with Atomic Rooster that Carl Palmer enjoyed his first real success as a founding member of a band. Media and fans alike immediately embraced Crane, Palmer and bassist/vocalist Nick Graham as the late 60s progressive rock scene was thriving and Palmer's reputation grew as a drummer with phenomenal skill and dizzying speed.
In the spring of 1970, Carl Palmer received a phone call that changed his life forever. Keyboard virtuoso Keith Emerson, himself enjoying Top 10 U.K. success with The Nice, was forming a new band with King Crimson founder Greg Lake who had also just experienced real success with his band's legendary "In The Court Of The Crimson King". After trying out several drummers, including Mitch Mitchell, the two wanted Palmer to audition for a spot in the new trio but Palmer was uncertain if he wanted to leave the growing success of Atomic Rooster behind. Reluctantly, he agreed to meet and rehearse with the band and thank God he did.
The trio's first rehearsal mostly featured Nice and King Crimson standards, including,"Rondo" and "21st Century Schizoid Man", and all three musicians describe it as a "magical feeling" when they first played together. The session blew everyone away and Palmer was offered the job right there on the spot. Immediately dubbed a "Supergroup" by the media, Emerson, Lake and Palmer (ELP) entered the musical arena with great expectations.
In August of 1970 ELP played its first show at Plymouth, and moved on immediately to the legendary Isle of Wight Festival. Following their set, which included an explosive version of "Pictures At An Exhibition" (complete with cannons), the fallout was massive. Said Palmer of the festival, "I don,'t recall how well we played. All I know is that we went down incredibly well." Even that may have been an understatement.
The following month the group finished its self-titled debut album, which was released in November. Instantly successful, it climbed to the Top 5 in England and the Top 20 in America. The classic single "Lucky Man" became a hit, and their stage show quickly became the stuff of legend.
Following a blistering schedule which saw the band touring furiously, the world over, ELP returned to the studio and released another impressive effort in "Trilogy".
1973 saw ELP returning to touring and Carl travelling to the Guildhall School of Music in London where he studied classical timpani. That year also saw ELP return to the studio to record the album Brain Salad Surgery, perhaps the band's definitive work. Bearing such memorable work as "Karn Evil 9", "Still You Turn Me On" and "Jerusalem", the album is highlighted by"Toccata", a reworking of Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera's Piano Concerto No. 1, and some of Carl Palmer's most amazing drumming and synthesized percussion work, including the world's first electric drum solo.
An insane touring schedule followed and the legendary scale and musicianship of ELP's live show continued to grow as evidenced by the release of the epic triple live album Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends, released in August 1974. Tired from a gruelling four year run which had seen the release of 5 albums as well as untold hundreds of tour dates, the band decided to take a hiatus to explore other projects and to recharge their creative juices.
Following the Works albums and a grandiose, bank breaking orchestral tour the band returned to the studio one last time for the album "Love Beach". "In Concert", a testament to the Works orchestral tour followed and in 1979 ELP quietly disbanded and exited the musical arena.
Opportunity knocked again for Carl Palmer when manager Brian Lane approached him in 1981. Lane was trying to put together a supergroup concept for Geffen records. Lane introduced ex King Crimson, John Wetton to Yes guitarist, Steve Howe. When that musical fit seemed right Lane brought in Palmer and keyboardist Geoff Downes (The Buggies, Yes) filled out the lineup. The group Asia was born.
Recording with Asia, and the concept of performing as a band rather than a fusing of solo artists, was something of a new experience for Carl Palmer who said, "We have tried to create a sound collectively rather than a project as individuals." The band's self-titled debut album "Asia" was released in 1982 and a small tour began. Asia exploded on the charts, right to number one, and over 7 million copies of the album were sold worldwide.
In 1988 the chance came for Carl Palmer to team up once again with Keith Emerson in a new group with California-based singer/bassist Robert Berry. 3, as they were called, released their only album, To The Power Of Three, on Geffen records. Though the group received respectable FM airplay and followed with a successful club tour, their release generated little interest and they disbanded early in 1989. Later in 1989 the Asia banner was raised once again when an invitation play a series of stadium dates with the Beach Boys brought Carl Palmer and John Wetton back into the Asia fold along with hired guns John Young and Alan Darby. Encouraged by the reception they received, Asia arranged another tour for the fall and convinced Geoff Downes to return.
A big tour followed and the Russian shows in particular represented another high in the Asia saga and were captured for posterity in the CD and video releases of Asia Live in Moscow. As Asia prepared to write a new album in 1991 John Wetton decided to leave and Carl Palmer jumped at the chance to reunite with his old mates Keith Emerson and Greg Lake in ELP.
Originally the band had only intended on writing and recording music for a planned film score but the chemistry was clearly still there and eventually it was decided that they should record an album. Signed to the newly founded Victory Records, ELP returned in 1992 with Black Moon, a strong effort produced by Mark Mancina. A video was released and an ambitious tour followed that lasted from the summer of 1992 well into 1993. Recalled Palmer, "I knew we'd be OK but I never dreamed it would be to this magnitude."
in 1991, Carl Palmer released his much-anticipated two-disk anthology Do Ya Wanna Play, Carl. The collection showcased Palmer's greatest recordings with ELP, Asia, Atomic Rooster plus and several rare and never-before-released tracks from every professional group had ever been in. Highlights included cuts from sessions with British rock artist Mike Oldfield, and a live track featuring Carl with his childhood idol, drum jazz icon Buddy Rich and his Orchestra. Perhaps the biggest gem for fans was the inclusion of the piece fans had been asking for since the seventies.
The Carl Palmer Band lineup did a highly successful US tour in 2006 and continues to tour throughout the world. Featuring Paul Bielatowicz on guitars; Simon Fitzpatrick on bass and Palmer on drums, the band will also embark on a 29 date tour of Canada, The US, and South America. The band has released a concert DVD and three acclaimed live CDs, Working Live Vol 1. Vol 2, and Vol. 3.
In 2006, Carl also regrouped for the long awaited reunion of the original ASIA, with Steve Howe, Geoff Downes and John Wetton. The band has done five world tours and recorded two new studio albums PHOENIX, released on Frontiers and EMI Records in 2008, and Omega, released in the Spring of 2010.
Carl Palmer is a drummer's drummer. A consummate professional, a brilliant technician and a dynamic showman, he has thrilled listeners and audiences alike for nearly four decades and along the way his dazzling speed and mastery of the drums, combined with his infectious stage personality, have secured for him a respected place in history as one of Rock and Roll's greatest drummers.
