If I Can Dream is a studio album by American singer Elvis Presley, (1935-77) released on October 30, 2015 by RCA Records and Legacy Recordings. The album features archival vocal recordings of Elvis accompanied by new orchestral arrangements by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It also features duets with Canadian singer Michael Bublé and Italian trio Il Volo. If I Can Dream was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, England, and it was produced by Nick Patrick and Don Reedman. Elvis's ex-wife Priscilla Presley, who also served as the executive producer of the album, said of the project: "This would be a dream come true for Elvis. He would have loved to play with such a prestigious symphony orchestra. The music…the force that you feel with his voice and the orchestra is exactly what he would have done".
This is a fantastic album from Elvis. Lush backings from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra give it quality and depth. The Orchestra definitely complements Elvis' magnificent voice on each track. Elvis sings in many musical genres and for the first time jazz. The Michael Buble duet on 'Fever' is very well done indeed and you would not know Elvis was not physically there in the studio. Some of the tracks will not be well known to the general public i.e. Neil Diamond's 'And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind' and 'There's Always Me' both beautiful sentimental ballads. My two favourites are 'An American Trilogy' and 'How Great Thou Art' as this is where the big orchestral effect comes to the fore. Makes the hair standupon the back of your neck! The fast tracks are also very well done and 'Burning Love' and 'Steamroller Blues' really rock and, in my opinion, much better than the original recordings. The album closes with the wonderful and timely message song 'If I Can Dream'. An absolute classic.
I cannot rate this album highly enough and for me Elvis' backings have needed amelioration for many years now. His voice remains timeless but some of his original backings are now showing signs of dating. This album, and hopefully future ones, will upgrade the sound like this album does.
There has never been a singer like Elvis and there never will be. Do yourself a favour and buy this album. Being close to the festive season it will make great presents for friends and relatives alike.Review by F. B. Quinn
