Henri Dutilleux's "Ainsi la nuit" (1976) is a modern classic, and it's easy to see why. This is a work that parodoxically combines impressionist lushness and total transparency, surface attractiveness and deep mystery. Ravel meets Bartok? The work is in seven movements, which each have their own particular concern, though there are "parenthetical" moments that interlink the entire piece. "Nocturne 1" is a mysterious static soundscape periodically fractured by outbursts. "Miroir de l'espace" is a fan-shaped movement where the first violin moves ever higher and the cello ever lower. "Litanies 1" is a series of variations where the pivotal chord of the piece is now more clearly stated. "Litanies 2" is a sort of weird cantabile movement, constantly reordering the same four or five notes. "Constellations" is a flurry of movement around a central note. The brief "Nocturnes 2", more busy than its predecessor, leads to the final "Temps suspendus" which manages to sum up the thematic material of the work.Tracks:
So there's a lot of variety across this 17-minute work. Dutilleux also manages to exploit nearly every possibility of the four strings here, though his extended techniques are never gratuitous nor a central focus of the work.
Of the two Pascal Dusapin works here, the more accessible is the String Quartet No. 3 (1993). Written in four movements (fast-mixed fast and slow-slow-fast) it superficially shows a fairly classical form. The first two movements are tentative, establishing the harmonies of the work. The eerie third movement is seven minutes of delicate, gossamer-like lines, while the ostinato-like fourth movement brings the work to a clear, if somewhat abrupt end. While this quartet doesn't break much new ground, it's very elegantly constructed and consistently entertaining.
I'm less impressed by the String Quartet No. 2 "Time Zones" (1989). Dusapin wanted to write a piece in 24 distinct movements (split here across 14 tracks) evoking a wide variety of feelings. Multiple instrumental configurations appear, such as solo violin or solo cello, or two violins and viola in addition to the quartet as a whole. Some moments here are interesting, but the quartet neither reveals a large-scale form nor convinces as a diaristic series of fragments. Since "Time Zones" takes up a whole half of the disc, I can't rate it so highly.
