Die Krupps are fairly unknown in the UK, but this album illustrates why their brand of industrial metal deserves some serious respect.
Consisting mainly of remixes by well known artists such as Sisters of Mercy, Paradise Lost and Revolting Cocks, there is some excellent material here, my personal favourite being Andrew Eldritch's spine-chilling take on 'Fatherland', building from an anguished wail to a rumbling juggernaut, complete with samples from what sounds like a crazed Hitler speech. This one would easily make my all-time top ten.
I don't know much about the history of Die Krupps, but lyrically it's hard to escape the conclusion that several of these tracks are drawn from personal experience of conflict zones and are all the more effective for it.
'Shellshocked' continues this nightmarish theme; 'no escape from dreaming.'
Elsewhere, the vicious 'Crossfire', apparently about a wedding party caught in a war-zone; 'honeymoon in hell' is particularly effective, using battle-field samples of flying missiles for extra atmosphere.
'Bloodsuckers'is a bitter tirade against big business and 'Iron Man' is a taut futuristic workout complete with synth backing.
The excellent 'Inside Out' is a masterpiece of despair, a man on the verge of ending it all, ostensibly because of a woman. She's not worth it mate.
There's plenty of solid tracks here; the opening rocker 'To the Hilt', the quirky 'Worst Case Scenario' and 'Hi Tech Low Life'.
Not everything works, but there are 16 tracks here compared to around 10 on most albums, so you're allowed the odd slip.
