The Latin rock band Del Castillo started in the winter of 2000 in Austin, TX, as a family CD project for singer/guitarists and brothers Mark del Castillo and Rick del Castillo, who eventually added Alex Ruiz on lead vocals, guitar, and harmonica; Albert Besteiro on bass; and Mike Zeoli on drums. That CD turned out to be Del Castillo's debut release, Brothers of the Castle, in 2001. Vida followed in 2002, and Brotherhood (with special guest Willie Nelson) in 2006. The group's self-titled fourth album appeared in April 2009. Del Castillo also has contributed to several films directed by Robert Rodriguez, including Spy Kids 3D, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Sin City, and Grindhouse. Performing with Rodriguez under the name Chingon, they recorded a version of the traditional Mexican song "Malaguena Salerosa" used in the Quentin Tarantino film Kill Bill Vol. II.

"If you like the Gipsy Kings, you're going to love Del Castillo. My ears could not believe the sounds that came out of my earphones as I hit the play button to hear another of many CDs. The first thing that caught my attention was the vibrant Spanish guitar playing by Mark del Castillo and Rick del Castillo. Then Alex Ruiz kicked in some very authentic sounding gitano vocals. Spanish Castle Tango, cut number two, continued with more of the same, only better. Both tunes featured the much-missed sounds of the castanets. Ruiz also shines on Dias de los Angeles, which almost sounds like a moorish chant. Next the brothers do Song for Jordan, another instrumental. Then, one is compelled to yell out 'ole' when the brothers launch into the flamenco-laced 29/11. In summary, this mystical production, especially the instrumental tunes, are the perfect companion for spiritual meditation since it brings peace to the mind. As it soothes the senses, it also transports the listener to another dimension in which one flows in a relaxed state through the universe."

The Austin-based Latino sextet's third album adds a few more English language songs to its predominantly Spanish repertoire, but otherwise it's a natural extension of the flamenco, blues, rock and world music Del Castillo has perfected since its 2001 inception. The focus remains on brothers Rick and Mark del Castillo's fiery and usually frantic fret-slashing work on Spanish (ie: acoustic, nylon stringed) guitars, but the duo add their flashy fireworks to this hour-long disc with admirable restraint. Alternately bubbly and sizzling percussion from percussionist Rik Holeman along with enthusiastic singer Alex Ruiz fuels a set of predominantly originals that finds its groove between the band's Tex-Mex roots and the brother's jazz-tinged guitar work. Supporter and fellow Austin-ite Willie Nelson contributes lead vocals on his "I Never Cared for You," as a Spanish/English duet with Ruiz, with Asleep at the Wheel's Ray Benson handling production for the track. Not nearly as bluesy or Stevie Ray Vaughan-influenced as los Lonely Boys but with as much soul, this should appeal to pop fans as well as admirers of Al di Meola and Paco de Lucia's work. "Ganate el Mundo" swings on a walking bassline similar to a Mexican "Stray Cat Strut," especially in the guitar solo, and the spirits of los Lobos and Carlos Santana are never far from the surface. The mix of ballads with upbeat tunes, English and Spanish lyrics, is well-sequenced and should attract a larger audience. The sound is crisp and beautifully recorded, with the acoustic guitars perfectly balanced in the mix, making this a logical album to break Del Castillo into the wider recognition it obviously deserves and is gearing towards.
