Acclaimed indie singer/songwriter whose poignant folk songcraft has transcended detours into pop, roots rock, indie rock, and psychedelia.

Since the late '90s, singer/songwriter Damien Jurado has built up one of the strongest catalogs on the indie scene, earning high critical praise for a poignant folk songcraft that has transcended detours into pop, roots rock, full-fledged electric indie rock, psychedelia, and even found-sound experiments. Nick Drake had a definite impact on much of his work, but Jurado modeled his career on more idiosyncratic, unpredictable figures like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, and Randy Newman – songwriters who followed their own muse wherever it took them, whether fans and critics enjoyed it or not. His independence was born at least in part from the influence of punk, and one of the results was a concern for emotional authenticity that led him to delve into other people's lives more than his own. Many of Jurado's songs spin concise, literate tales of quiet, everyday despair, which have often earned him comparisons to short-story writer Raymond Carver. Following a handful of self-released cassettes, Jurado made his official full-length debut in 1997 with Waters Ave S. His second album, 1999's Rehearsals for Departure, proved to be his critical breakthrough. After over a dozen albums combined for the Sub Pop and Secretly Canadian labels, he found his way onto the Billboard 200 for the first time with the Richard Swift-produced Maraqopa trilogy in the 2010s.

A native of Seattle, Jurado started playing in a succession of local punk bands in 1989. One of them, the Christian-tinged Coolidge, also featured future Pedro the Lion mastermind David Bazan, and eventually had a track featured on the Tooth & Nail label's Christian punk/emo compilation I'm Your Biggest Fan, Vol. 1. Meanwhile, Jurado began to explore the solo route during the mid-'90s, writing simple folk-based tunes and releasing them on his own cassette-only label, Casa Recordings. Leaded, Trailer Park Radio, and Gasoline all helped create a local cult following, and he found an influential fan in fellow Christian and Sunny Day Real Estate singer Jeremy Enigk, who brought him to the attention of Sub Pop. After two 7" releases on Sub Pop, "Motorbike" and "Trampoline," Jurado issued his proper debut album, Waters Ave S., in 1997, and followed it with a spare, home-recorded EP for Made in Mexico, Gathered in Song, a year later.

Jurado's sophomore effort was also his breakthrough; released in 1999, Rehearsals for Departure established him as a singer/songwriter of tremendous subtlety and skill, and won near-universal critical acclaim. Jurado's rootsy, minimalist folk-pop and fragile vocals pulled listeners in close, and his knack for a memorable hook kept them there. For his next move, Jurado confounded fans and critics alike with 2000's Postcards and Audio Letters, a compilation of conversation fragments found on the audio cassettes that Jurado collected obsessively (from sources like thrift-store boom boxes and answering machines) and often used for songwriting inspiration.

The proper follow-up to Rehearsals for Departure was Ghost of David, issued on Sub Pop later in 2000. While it hewed mostly to the style of Rehearsals, it also dabbled in some of the found-sound collage aspects of Postcards. Jurado next turned to the Burnt Toast label to issue the one-off EP Four Songs in 2001, then formed a full band dubbed Gathered in Song for a change of pace from his typically mellow style. Featuring guitarist Eric Fisher, bassist Josh Golden, and drummer Andy Myers (all of whom played more than one instrument), Gathered in Song debuted on Jurado's next album, 2002's fully electrified I Break Chairs.

Jurado subsequently parted ways with Sub Pop, looking to scale back his recording and touring activities in order to spend more time with his family and, to a lesser degree, his day job as a preschool teacher. He landed on the Indiana-based Secretly Canadian label, for whom he debuted in 2003 with Where Shall You Take Me?, a return to his trademark, low-key folk-ballad style. He followed it with an EP for a smaller label (Acuarela), titled Holding His Breath. A year later, he returned to Secretly Canadian for another EP, Just in Time for Something. His next full-length, On My Way to Absence, arrived in early 2005. Jurado continued to keep busy with And Now That I'm in Your Shadow, a spare, hushed collection of songs that appeared late in 2006. Early the following year, Gathered in Song was reissued with bonus tracks.

His eighth full-length, Caught in the Trees, was released in 2008, followed by the Richard Swift-produced Saint Bartlett in the spring of 2010. The collaboration turned into a fast friendship, and the pair reunited for a weekend that summer with the unintended outcome of a home-recorded covers album. With works ranging from John Denver to Kraftwerk, Other People's Songs, Vol. 1 saw a temporary, free digital release before the end of the year. They reconvened for Jurado's 2012 album Maraqopa, and again for 2014's Brothers & Sisters of the Eternal Son. Both albums landed on the Billboard 200, a first for Jurado. Continuing a trend of moving incrementally deeper into psychedelic textures since working with Swift, Visions of Us on the Land arrived in 2016, completing what was termed the Maraqopa trilogy. That same year, Other People's Songs, Vol. 1 got a physical release from Secretly Canadian. Following five straight LPs with Swift that included the character-driven trilogy, Jurado returned in 2018 with the more personal The Horizon Just Laughed, his first entirely self-produced album.

In the Shape of a StormJurado left his hometown of Seattle for Los Angeles before recording his next album, 2019's In the Shape of the Storm, his debut for Mama Bird Recording Co. Consisting of songs written over the course of his career but never recorded, it embraced more firsts – it was recorded in two hours with only Jurado's voice, acoustic guitar, and occasional additional guitar by Josh Gordon. Another self-produced, only slightly more fleshed-out set with Gordon, What’s New, Tomboy?, arrived on Mama Bird in 2020.

Seattle native Damien Jurado's first album is an impressive debut that was sadly overlooked by many people still caught up in the hype of the celebrated Sub Pop Records and the aftermath left from the grunge era. While Jurado is responsible for writing hundreds of songs on his own, he chose 13 to make the cut for this album. Many are silly, dealing with topics such as purple anteaters or the circus. Others cry out as therapy for Jurado, trying to reconcile his parent's painful divorce or the feeling of being independent from a recent relationship. Still others are just fictional stories, woven by this man who is known in certain indie folk circles as a master storyteller. Taking jangly guitars and Jurado's awkward, yet soothing crooning, along with steady drumming and a host of other instruments, Waters Ave S. is silky smooth in its delivery and rarely comes up short. While not entirely similar to his later works, on its own, Waters Ave S. is a special treat that deserves a listen.

In the rush to embrace the latest next-big-things, it's artists like Damien Jurado who much too often get lost in the shuffle. Once upon a time, a singer/songwriter of Jurado's depth and grace would have been anointed "the new Dylan," but today he's lucky if his brand of darkly beautiful folk-pop gets noticed at all. Rehearsals for Departure, Jurado's second full-length effort for Sub Pop, deserves a much better fate. A gifted lyricist with a comparable knack for melody, his songs are simple but remarkably affecting, with an uncanny knack for unlocking the deeper meaning in the mundane details of everyday life. Highlights like the opening "Ohio" and "Letters and Drawings" are evocative portraits of urban malaise, while the rollicking "Honey Baby" sounds like nothing so much as a long-lost honky tonk classic.

Another strong collection of urban folk songs from Damien Jurado, Ghost of David builds on the gentle, friendly loneliness of Rehearsals for Departure and deepens it with a spiritual, often otherworldly feel. With the notable exception of "Paxil"'s bedroom-crafted rock, the album casts a reflective, melancholy spell, especially on "Great Today," "Tonight I Will Retire," "Walk With Me," and "Ghost in the Snow." However, Jurado lets rays of hope shine through on "Johnny Go Riding" and the title track, and songs like "Medication" and "Desert" showcase his conversational lyrics and delivery. A sweetly earnest version of "Rosewood Casket" adds another dimension to this contemplative, compelling album, which is Jurado's finest work yet.

While Damien Jurado's fans already know what an accomplished and thoughtful singer/songwriter he is, on I Break Chairs, he also proves that he can rock with the best. With his band Gathered in Song (named after one of his EPs), Jurado puts his finely crafted lyrics in a completely different setting, matching his wound-up emotions with cranked-up guitars. But the most impressive thing about I Break Chairs isn't just that Jurado proves he can rock, it's that he can rock in a variety of ways and sound equally convincing, whether it's the rousing roots rock of "Paperwings"; the jangly, early-'80s college rock-inspired "Birdcage"; or the elliptical, Pixies-eqsue punk-pop of "The Way You Look." I Break Chairs also features a diverse yet cohesive production that spans the bright, power-poppy sheen of "Big Deal" to the brooding, lo-fi "Dancing," which sounds like it was recorded in a dive. Likewise, the album showcases a wider range of emotions than any of Jurado's previous work. While beautiful, heartbreaking ballads like "Never Ending Tide," "Inevitable" and "Like Titanic" are par for the course for Jurado, an optimistic, even uplifting tone – epitomized by "Parade" and "Lose My Head" – runs through the album, making it as emotionally deep as it is musically diverse. Though it's not exactly a typical release for Jurado, I Break Chairs sets a new standard for his work.

Label: Secretly Canadian | # SC84 | Time: 00:31:42

Arriving just a year after the surprisingly eclectic and electric rock of I Break Chairs, Damien Jurado's Where Shall You Take Me? is something of a return – but not a retreat – to the moody minimalism of albums like Ghost of David. Songs like "Amateur Night" and "Omaha" share the acoustic strumming and rustic, shuffling rhythms of his earlier work, but also have a subtly polished confidence that brings out the warmth in Jurado's singing and playing as never before. The country and folk elements always present in his music come to the fore on "Abilene" and "Window," which, with its sweet, close harmonies, borrows equally from the traditions of bluegrass and hymns. A devotional thread runs through Where Shall You Take Me?, particularly on its second half, where "I Can't Get Over You" and "Tether" contrast love's complexities with deceptively simple melodies and arrangements. Overall, the album is less challenging than I Break Chairs, although "Texas to Ohio" recalls that work's Springsteen-influenced rock sound and the spooky, drum machine-driven "Intoxicated Hands" is a beautifully brooding ballad that rivals Jurado's darkest moments. While Where Shall You Take Me? might be less ambitious than its predecessor, it certainly has its own compelling charms; the album has an off the cuff, direct feel that suggests it was recorded with a few friends over the course of an afternoon, particularly on songs like "Matinee." More importantly, Jurado's singing and songwriting are affecting in virtually any setting and on any scope. Where Shall You Take Me? is a small triumph, but a triumph nonetheless.

On My Way to Absence continues on the similar delicate path that Jurado paved starting with Where Shall You Take Me?, with subtle differences. Jurado seems to broaden his palette with which to express this dark business of life on On My Way to Absence – lush strings swirl underneath tracks like "White Center" and "Night Out for the Downer," while the use of minimal electronics, keyboards, and samples creeps up on tracks like "Big Decision" and "A Jealous Heart Is a Heavy Heart." All of this is sequenced next to the stripped-down and melancholy rock tracks that Jurado is known for, the dark confessional "Fuel" and the raw "I Am the Mountain" being the best examples. On My Way to Absence offers many new areas of musical exploration, suggesting a more mature arranger in Damien Jurado mingling with the wonderfully sad storyteller and vivid landscape painter that he is already known for on previous releases.

EAC | FLAC | Tracks (Cue&Log) ~ 246 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 110 Mb | Scans ~ 70 Mb

Damien Jurado's seventh full-length – and God knows how many singles, EPs and compilation cuts – walks quietly in the shadow of 2005's On My Way to Absence. While the soft approach is his and his band's modus operandi, the subtle differences from recording to recording are, nonetheless, pronounced, Whereas On My Way to Absence was adorned with simple acoustic guitars and framed in everything from strings and piano, there were also some slow, light rock & roll tracks, where the band plugged in. Not so here on And Now That I'm in Your Shadow. Drums only appear on a couple of cuts, and electric guitars are almost entirely absent. Sound effects, big echo chambers, and reverb grace "Montesano," and one or two other tracks, but mostly, it's just Jurado with his acoustic guitar, a piano, and some strings. The feel is late night, on the edge of quiet, and full of pathos. Once upon a time he refrained from writing confessional material; his songs are drenched in it now, whether metaphorical or not. Jurado's storytelling skills, however, have become more sophisticated and multi-dimensional than they were before. Check "Denton, Texas," the title track, the solo acoustic "Shannon Rhodes," and "Gas Station." The slow country stroll of "There Goes Your Man," and the drum machine-driven acoustic cut "What Were the Chances," a duet with Jenna Conrad. Oh yeah, it's quiet, mopey and distinct: Jurado's way of writing distills the complicated notions of the heart into images or tiny actions: a breath, a glance, a hand moving from one place to the next on the human body, automobiles in the parking lots of truck stops. He is the king of miniature still lifes, and his voice doesn't lie. And Now That I'm in Your Shadow is sophisticated, honest, and full of gray light.

Review by Thom Jurek, Allmusic.com

Damien Jurado's records are like little outposts on a desolate Midwestern highway: overgrown filling stations, dilapidated barns, canted trailers. They have that abandoned and futile quality; rustic and battered by time, they can make us gasp with nostalgia for lives we've never lived. In Jurado's songs– tunes for falling asleep behind the wheel with a bottle between your thighs and nothing but sky on the horizon– you can feel his accumulated fatigue.

But if you'd spent your entire musical career trawling the same highway, always stuck between gears, you'd be tired, too. "Lover, I am still here breaking chairs," he sings on "Hoquiam", wallowing, as ever, in romantic stagnancy. Jurado's never quite in love and never quite out; he's always desperate, losing, and not too proud to beg. He's spent the better part of a decade falling for variously unavailable women– wives, teen runaways, and people who've just moved on. It wouldn't be a Damien Jurado album if there wasn't a sense of endless return: And Now That I'm in Your Shadow finds him wearing his rut a little deeper into the road. "Does your husband know I call you sweetheart?" he asks on "What Were the Chances", going so far as to ask, "Would you change your last name to mine?" Jurado is joined by a new band on this album– Eric Fisher and Jenna Conrad– and it's Conrad, whose voice is as lovely and self-effacing as Jurado's, who answers him amid an icy, slow-mo swirl of acoustic guitar, clicky mechanical drums, and forlorn keys: "I think my kids would mind." Has this guy ever gotten a break?

If so, he hasn't put it down in song, and his latest album's aura of defeat makes you wonder if it's really starting to get to him. While Jurado's records often alternate between vanishing ballads and melancholy pop-rockers, Shadow revolves entirely around the former– the songs are unstintingly slow, delicate, and sparse to the brink of abstraction. Jurado and his band festoon wide blank spaces with little scraps of finger-picked guitar, humming keys, and swelling strings, all seeming immersed within a great silence. As such, the album requires several listens before it resolves into something deeper than a pleasant background.

Once you can hear them, the details are often captivating– how "Denton, TX" brightens from a dim dirge to a sparkly shuffle with a flicker of piano, the dramatic efficacy of the title track's stormy cymbal washes, and the lean ripple that "There Goes Your Man" achieves despite its meager palette. Jurado can be a subtle lyricist– the Decemberists-esque tragic love story "I Had No Intentions" is particularly well-turned– but he ventures into romance novel territory too, with all of the sappy sentimentality (see pictures of babies and wedding days on "I am Still Here") and no redeeming penetration of moist grottoes. This penchant for cliche isn't the scope of who he is (this is a guy who wrote a really pretty song about asking God to kill his schizophrenic brother), but it's an undeniable part of him. At least, unlike so many other sad-sack singers, Jurado's weary resignation undersells the overstated lyrics– he sounds like he's genuinely too sad to get worked up about them.

Nearly 20 years into his tenure as a prominent Pacific Northwest punk-turned-beloved folk-leaning songwriter, Jurado is still perfecting his mixture of barely restrained angst and carefully strategized tranquility. CAUGHT IN THE TREES continues to evoke the ghosts of his peers, Kurt Cobain and Elliott Smith, but is neither as hopeless as the former nor as vulnerable as the latter. The guitars get louder on standout tracks like “Caskets,” but the sweetness on display during “Gillian Was A Horse” and the engaging sadness laid bare on “Last Rights” (both given an even more sympathetic air by Jenny Conrad’s co-vocals) border on stunning.

Review by Kenneth Herzog, Allmusic.com

When Damien Jurado flashed his new wedding ring during a show in Chicago this past fall, a chorus of "awwww"s seeped from the crowd predictably. One has to wonder, however, if there weren't a few seasoned fans in that audience whose "awwww"s were underscored by "uh-oh"s. The songwriter settling down here is, after all, one of the better chroniclers of heartbreak, betrayal, and the other side of love working at the moment. And while no decent person could wish misery on another just for the sake of song, we've nevertheless seen plenty of talents derailed by rehab, children, and holy matrimony.

But let's not get carried away: What we do know is something– maybe marriage, maybe a general restlessness, maybe straight-up serendipity– woke Jurado up after 2006's stately and sometimes sleepy Now That I'm in Your Shadow. The result, 2008 opus Caught in the Trees, features a rock solid outing from backing bandmates Jenna Conrad and Eric Fisher supporting some of Jurado's best songwriting to date– not to mention his most rousing musical offerings since I Break Chairs, all congealing in a manner one can't help but call effortless.

Opener "Gillian Was a Horse" sets the bar high, thanks to crisp drumming and the clockwork crunch of a maraca. "Trials" and "Caskets" are similarly propulsive, carried along by confident strums and a viscous bassline, respectively. Elsewhere, "Last Rights" sails along a bed of strings. Gone are the pregnant silences that punctuated Shadow, and with them the hesitant tempos of hopelessness. Caught in the Trees, quite simply, is too busy moving along to get too caught up in anything.

Which isn't to say Jurado's usual complexities aren't here; if he has ever written an unequivocally contented song, I've yet to hear it. Indeed, a good half of the numbers on Caught in the Trees deal directly with a favorite theme of Jurado's: the fallout from infidelity, manifest most often here in repeated references to lies, liars, lying, specters of jealous husbands, and "bullshit talkers." Yet there's a sense of progress too, of looming reconciliation or at the very least the intention to work things through rather than dwell on them. "Dimes" begins with Jurado resolving to call a lover's husband, and ends by asking "What happens now, when it all goes down?" Later, "Sheets" seems to take that husband's perspective, with the lover cast as "a wounded bird needing a nest." By "Best Dress", someone– could be the lover, could be the husband– sounds prepared the claim the embattled woman as his own once and for all.

Still, the most satisfying moments on Trees are those that find Jurado and his band embracing their pop sensibilities: "Gillian" is a thing of wondrous songwriting efficacy, its verses all snapping snugly into place like so many Lego blocks. Album high point "Go First" triumphs as both the record's most dynamic and anthemic track, and like "Gillian", also makes the most concessions to standard verse-chorus structure. Trees' latter half culminates with "Paper Kite", which conveys a drama and a desolation that go beyond Jurado's words thanks to atmospheric production flourishes. These three tracks in particular feel the most removed from Shadow, and, we might speculate, the most indicative of what our groom may have in store post-honeymoon. If that is so, then by all means: till death do them part.

Damien Jurado - Saint Bartlett (2010)
EAC | FLAC | Tracks (Cue&Log) ~ 187 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 84 Mb | Scans ~ 82 Mb
Label: Secretly Canadian | # SC192 | Time: 00:36:37

Recorded over the course of a week with only the help of producer/musician Richard Swift, Damien Jurado's 2010 album finds the singer/songwriter aiming all the more clearly for the stately, somewhere between the Band at its most formal and the later Flaming Lips at their most controlled. Starting with the keyboards and handclaps of "Cloudy Shoes," Saint Bartlett plays with any number of elements of rock and pop history – not for nothing does a classic Phil Spector drumbeat appear on "Arkansas" – but ultimately there's a sense of solitude in vast spaces (and especially vast American spaces) that dominates. At its most gently beatific, on numbers like the serene guitar-and-bells blend of "Rachel & Cali" and the steady piano-and-keyboard blend of "The Falling Snow," it seems like all will be well, even though the songs suggest darker shades in the music alone. Lyrically, Jurado's portraits of questioning souls and contemplation perhaps never get so intense as with the combination of yearning singing, acoustic guitar, and distant sonic sludge and disturbance on "Kansas City" (though "Kalama," in its tale of a dying soul speaking to his mother wondering about what happens next, comes close). Blasts of feedback and other dissonant elements crop up at points, but otherwise this is an album of focused calm in both singing and playing, a vision of concern and empathy amid unease.

Review by Ned Raggett, Allmusic.com

It's hard to find an entrance point into Damien Jurado's discography. You could start from the beginning, 1997's Waters Ave. S., but that record is filled with the sort of angsty, electric Pac NW indie-rock that is largely uncharacteristic of his catalogue as a whole. You could start with his first folk-leaning LP, 1999's Rehearsals for Departure, which has one of the best and most tender songs he's written, "Eyes For Windows", or 2002's comparatively upbeat I Break Chairs, but there's not much to make either stand out from the pack. If nothing else, Jurado has been oddly cursed by his own consistency.

Produced by the increasingly ubiquitous Richard Swift, Saint Bartlett, Jurado's ninth record is, finally, a striking departure. So much so that only the sound of his voice keeps you from thinking this could be the work of someone else. The change is noticeable right off the bat, announced by the lushly stringed baroque pop of "Cloudy Shoes", and it continues throughout, with meditations on 1950s girl-group balladry, thorny Neil Young-esque guitar rock, and cavernous chamber-pop.

Swift deserves a fair amount of credit for the reinvention that's on display here, and his ear for instrumentation does wonders for these songs. The woodblock percussion that backs "Arkansas" gives the tune a slight ramshackle bent, while Swift applies the perfect amount of guitar fuzz to turn "Wallingford" into a gentle stomper. Most impressively, the application of subtle space in "Kalama" lends a new gravitas to Jurado's voice, effectively making him bigger than his own sound.

Despite Swift's major contributions, Saint Bartlett is still very much a Damien Jurado album. His best work has always been marked with heartache and desolation, and it's a testament to his strengths that even on Saint Bartlett's most upbeat songs, he manages to convey feelings of loneliness and loss. It helps here that he's still working within his lyrical wheelhouse. The mood on Saint Bartlett ranges from bitter to desperate and back again. Mostly, though, Jurado claims ownership of Saint Bartlett's achievements simply by turning in his strongest songwriting to date. Even the straightforward folk cuts here have more potentcy, especially on haunting "Beacon Hill".

The songs on Saint Bartlett would be considered an achievement for any artist– but the fact that they come 13 years into a career makes the album even more of a triumph. Maybe the record's accessibility and lushness could lead to a bigger audience for Jurado, but in any case, it's a welcome surprise from a journeyman so dependable he risked being forgotten.

Seattle singer/songwriter Damien Jurado is one of the better examples of the somewhat invisible but very real trend of gentle folk musicians who started out in hardcore bands. Along with Mark Thousands (whose work in Youth of Today gave way to a hushed solo career), Dan Littleton (the Hated to Ida), and even Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat and Fugazi eventually mellowing into the Evens), Jurado's punk past was held in stark contrast to the spare folk dirges that marked the beginnings of his solo career in the late '90s. While hardcore and indie folk might represent two extremes, the musicians who are versed in the ethos of punk tend to have a more imaginative approach to their folk leanings than those who come up in the sleepy coffeehouse scenes. Be it production, instrumentation, or political lyrical undertones, there's a slightly different perspective that's always under the surface. This has always been the case with Jurado, whose fragile voice and stoic playing have always just barely hidden themes of pain and longing more aggressive than helpless. With his tenth studio outing, Maraqopa, Jurado offers his most colorful and nuanced set of songs yet, and while they're a far cry from hardcore, they wander into places well removed – and far more interesting – than his earlier wounded troubador role. Beginning with the dusty road psychedelia of "Nothing Is the News," the album takes on a vividly live feel. Meandering lead guitars and bristling drums back up Jurado's ghostly multi-tracked vocal arrangements, sounding like a modern take on '70s British folk-rock. Some of his earlier work could fall under the Americana bracket, but the far-out production of Richard Swift, reprising the collaboration he and Jurado began on 2010's Saint Bartlett, pushes the songs to their least predictable limits. Echoplex-treated anguished screams, organ swells, and the shakingly creepy children's chorus backing up every line of "Life Away from the Garden" are perhaps the opposite of typically cloying Americana. Maraqopa reaches its peak on the Phil Spector-ish "Reel to Reel." The lush production packs in dozens of disjointed sounds yet remains wide open, offering ample room for Jurado to deliver earnestly beautiful lines to his subject: a bedroom rock star offering the narrator "The greatest songs I'll ever hear from a band you started in your mind." It's a touchingly naked moment, and ironically, happening in one of the busiest arrangements on the album. Painting from a broad palette of sounds and singing from a well of strong melodies, the record works best as a whole piece, revealing new elements and deeper dynamics with subsequent listens. While Jurado's life as an angry young punk may not be apparent from his work on Maraqopa, what can be heard vividly is a bold progression that encapsulates all the phases that came before it and results in his most adventurous and fulfilling work to date.

Review by Fred Thomas, Allmusic.com

Maybe 13 really is a lucky number. That's the number of years into Seattle singer/songwriter Damien Jurado's career that he linked up with production extraordinaire Richard Swift for the former's 2010 LP, Saint Bartlett. The album saw the former painting his works with broader brushstrokes and an expanded palette of colors, exercising an accessibility that made the album stand out like a gloriously sore thumb in a catalog of Pacific Northwest folk rock that, for most of the previous decade, had only registered with the closest-watching of observers. As much credit as Jurado obviously deserved for making the leap from "good" to "great," though, it's inarguable that teaming up with Swift, whose reputation as a studio collaborator grows with every release, was Jurado's most inspired choice during Saint Bartlett's genesis. The echoed claps of the swooning opener "Cloudy Shoes" sounded like the remaining pieces of a puzzle, hidden for way too long, had been found and snapped into place.

Soulmates are hard to come by, and Damien Jurado definitely agrees. For his latest album, Maraqopa, he reunited with Swift in the latter's National Freedom studio in Oregon, the pair sharing performing duties. The results are kind of a sequel to Saint Bartlett: Like its predecessor, Maraqopa is largely varied in sonic mood, changing its tone song-to-song to include soft-psych freak-outs, rainy folk, haunted 1960's pop, and slow-burning oddball sparseness. That might sound like an unfocused mess on paper, but this collection's success lies in Swift and Jurado's restless experimentation. You can almost feel the heat off of the pair's kinetic synapses, as it radiates off every unspooling guitar line on the stormy opener "Nothing Is the News", or the gorgeous warbling that lies under "Working Titles".

Press materials for Maraqopa have pointed out that the title references a fictional, far-away place, going as far to subtly suggest that the record is a loosely drawn concept album. I'm not buying it– partially because Jurado can't help but evoke the very real section of the United States he resides in, from the title of "So On, Nevada" to the Washington references in "Working Titles"– but that's not to suggest that Maraqopa is lacking in concept. Jurado recently mentioned on Twitter that he drew inspiration from The End Is at Hand, a double-zip homemade compilation from California blog Aquarium Drunkard that rounded up obscure 1960s/1970s psychedelic folk and guitar music attached to the Jesus People's Movement.

Maraqopa's first half is, indeed, cloaked in the long shadow of religion, with references to "golden crowns," stars aligning, and the spookiness of faith (and, at times, lack thereof). The spectre of belief literally haunts a few of these songs; "Life Away From the Garden" elicits chills via organ stabs and faded, childlike call-and-response backup singing, as Jurado exercises his sneaky lyrical talents with double-meaning ("There was a time/ When we were golden/ Like the sun/ We were lights in the world"). By the time the spooky, deeply felt weirdness of the invisible-fame non-fantasy "Reel to Reel" arrives, Jurado's belief-fixated eye has shifted from the intangible to the tangible, underlining a motive that's run throughout his career: always ask questions, whether you're staring at the sky, down below, or the people around you on solid ground.

Maraqopa feels less revelatory than Saint Bartlett on pure impact; while the latter was a fine balance of chewy folk-pop delicacies and the basement-borne shadowy expressions that Jurado's built his fanbase on, this album is more of a mood piece, its melodic rewards teased out over time and drenched in the type of steady rain that his home state is known for. So, it's the second-best album of his career, then– which is nothing to sneeze at, really. Maraqopa marks 15 years since Jurado's debut album, the Sub Pop-released Waters Ave S, and yet this fruitful renaissance has seemingly just begun, injecting new life into an artist who had less been written off than he'd been lost to the hype-obsessed, new-new-new sands of time. Whether the destinations be real or fictional, it'll be a real treat to watch where Jurado– hopefully with Swift in tow– will end up next.

Long-running indie singer/songwriter Damien Jurado branched out into even deeper sonic territory with his Richard Swift-produced 2012 album, Maraqopa. That album's production managed to be in a constant state of tense flux without ever becoming busy or overblown, winding subtle touches of psychedelia and haunted echo around the acoustic core of Jurado's songs. A few years later, the duo of Swift and Jurado return with the sublime and even further out Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son, a twisting set of songs that hides intricate production techniques in Jurado's increasingly layered and complex compositions. The most remarkable element of the production is the heavy '70s dub influence that hides in the corners at first but eventually sprawls out over the course of the album. The treated vocals of "Jericho Road" flutter with distorted echoes as the song builds into what sounds like an update of a lost track from Jesus Christ Superstar, with a far more demented mix. This song spills into the epic "Silver Donna," also drenched in watery echo, groove-heavy hand percussion, and falsetto vocals from Jurado, reaching their crescendo with rippling call-and-response harmonies near the song's end. Somewhere between the most driven moments of early Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the lovely confusion of the Lee Perry-produced Congos albums, the song finds its uniquely cracked voice. Elsewhere on the album, lofty autoharps, psyched-out organ tones, and Swift's bright, often orchestral arrangements leave no space too empty or too exposed. Like a far more experimental take on the perfect pacing of Bon Iver's best work, songs like "Silver Katherine" meld Jurado's always beautiful songwriting with gorgeous accompaniment and just enough studio magic to keep things moving forward for the duration of the album. What could have been a somewhat sleepy album is taken into a place of curious introspection, heightened emotional dynamics, and mysterious religious undercurrents. This album continues the colorful and reaching work of the albums that preceded it, and if this pairing of Swift's deft production and Jurado's risk-taking songwriting continues, even greater things are on the horizon than these already gorgeous songs.
