Crow was formed in 1967, in Minneapolis, by singer David Wagner, guitarist Dick Wiegand, bassist Larry Wiegand, keyboardist Dave ‘Kink’ Middlemist, and drummer Harry Nehls under the name South 40, which was used until the group went national. Nehls was replaced by Denny Craswell (former Castaways, of Liar Liar fame, drummer) once the group went national. Columbia Records brought them in to record a demo in 1969; they passed, and Crow was signed to Amaret. In 1969, Crows debut album Crow Music was recorded. The single Evil Woman (Dont Play Your Games With Me) made the Billboard Hot 100 Top 20 that fall. Crow by Crow and Mosaic were their follow-up albums, released in 1970 and 1971 respectively. Singles released off Crows later albums were not as successful; the band wanted to move to Elektra Records, but Amaret wouldnt let them out of their contract while retaining their name. Wagner left the group in 1971; the band replaced him with Mick Stanhope and attempted to move forward, but collapsed for good in 1972. David Wagner recorded a solo album for Amaret in late 1972 titled: d/b/a Crow. They disbanded in 1972, but reformed again in 1980. This version of Crow included original lead vocalist David Wagner, John Richardson, and Jeff Christensen on lead guitar/vocals, Denny Johnson on bass, and Bobby Belleville on drums. From September 1980 to July 1981, they recorded many sessions, which resulted in a new studio album titled Crow on the Run in 1982. This version of Crow disbanded in early 1982. In 1988, Crow reformed and they continue to play concerts all over the United States and have released numerous albums. All the members have won Minnesota Music Awards for their own individual instruments. In 2005, they were inducted into the Minnesota Rock/Country Hall of Fame and, in 2009, the Iowa Rock & Roll Music Hall of Fame. Crow still plays occasionally in the Midwest (summers) with Dave Wagner on vocals. Recorded at Universal Studios, Chicago, and Great Lakes Studios in Sparta, Michigan, Crow Music was produced by longtime Chicago area producer, and later LA, Bob Monaco, for Dunwich Productions (another important name of the Chicago 60s music scene). Bob’s name shows up on numerous Chicagoland recordings; I remember first seeing his name on my copy of The Flock’s single Take Me Back issued on Destination Records in 1967. He’s been associated with such bands as The Cryan’ Shames, The Mauds, The American Breed, The Buckinghams, and Rufus, amongst others. Bob’s most obvious addition to Crow’s music was the placement of a small horn section on some of their music (the band didn’t like it, but the short tasty bursts set their music apart from similar sounds of the time, and still sounds good). Bob’s use of horns on his 60s recording arrangements (a liking also shared by Dunwich label co-owner Bill Traut) helped establish a trademark sound to the music coming out of Chicago that seemed to take off on a national level with such bands as The Electric Flag, Blood, Sweat, & Tears, and Chicago Transit Authority (the first and last having obvious Chicago connections), and later brought success to a reformulated Ides Of March (another Chicago band who hit the bigtime with their 1970 single Vehicle). If a roots of horn/rock were compiled both Bob Monaco and Bill Traut would part of the roots of that tree. Bob, who sadly passed away in 2008, also co-authored the book The Platinum Rainbow, with James Riordan; an insiders look at the recording industry. Crow Music comes highly recommended to all lovers of hard and heavy rock.
