Crabby Appleton will always be remembered for their fantastic Go Back’ single, a brooding slice of power pop that reached #36 in June 1970. The band's debut album released on Elektra Records at the same time was a fairly diverse mix of harder rock statements and delicate tunes (sometimes recalled the baroque-pop of late 6o’s The Zombies or the Left Banke), although touches of psychedelic jamming (in early The Doors/Iron Butterfly vein) and classical-influenced Hammond organ passages (similar to The Nice) could be heard as well. It's worth noting that 2 years earlier vocalist Michael Fennelly was a part of Millennium band, the sunshine pop-psych project whose ‘Begin’ album has since garnered enormous cult recognition.

Most people will remember Crabby Appleton as the one hit wonders who took "Go Back" to the US Top 40 in June 1970. I must confess I didn't take much notice because the song was way too poppy for my taste at the time.
In 1976 however the local Dutch division of CBS took it upon itself to re-release two Curt Boettcher related 60s sunshine pop gems: Sagittarius' "Present Tense" and The Millennium's "Begin". Mike Fennelly, Crabby Appleton's singer/guitarist/songwriter, was part of the latter. It wasn't until I got access to the internet that I finally was able to track down music by the individual members, but sadly most of the CD releases consist of song-demo's.
Exception to the rule are the Crabby Appleton albums of which the 1st is a gem in its own right. Clearly, next to Curt, Mike Fennelly was the most talented of the Millennium crew and this is the album he proved it. Crabby Appleton does what Steve Stills tried to achieve with Mannassas, putting pop-music into overdrive and take it to the borders of Rock. Mannassas failed in that mission because the players took themselves way too seriously. Crabby Appleton succeeds because of the audible joy the musicians have in playing their music. Without going overboard they display their skills, but there's no ego-tripping and in the overall approach the songs are the most important. And great songs they are !
I liked the original vynil record and my view has not changed over the years. Good quality song writing- great musicianship Very varied tracks from rock to jazz to ballads. This CD captures essence of of the 70's. A record of its time that still stands the test of time.
The musical and lyrical innovation of this group are truly unique,Michael Fennelly`s vocals are varying from powerfully vibrant to eerily haunting, but always different and strangely memorable.
