Back in the in the 80's' guitarist Christ Flory was a member of tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton's Quintet. So it is no surprise that Flory would invite the tenor saxophonist to be part of his own quintet CD and list him as the featured artist. The result of the reunion is a superb swing into bop date. Listen to the opening "Lady's in Love". It swings hard from start to finish with both Flory and Hamilton contributing soaring solos. Drummer Chuck Riggs' inspired playing here sounds like a tribute to the late Jake Hanna and that is high praise indeed. Pianist Larry Ham and bassist Lee Hudson complete the very compatible quintet.
The rest of the CD proceeds through a variety of swinging moods and approaches. Flory plays lots of single note lines but has a strong chordal approach, as well. Over the bossa nova rhythm of "Girl Talk" Flory reminds the listener a bit of Wes Montgomery. The guitarist happily digs into the blues on his own jaunty "Hit and Run" and on the simmering "After Hours". Hamilton has a ballad feature on "Born to be Blue" and Flory on "Moonlight in Vermont". Ham solos very nicely on this latter track and throughout the CD. The quartet minus Hamilton swings "Isn't It a Lovely Day". But these are just a few of the CD's highlights. Every track here is full of improvisational magic and finds an inspired groove. Flory, Hamilton and the band are in top form throughout.~Amazon
