At the outset of CHANGE, Chick Corea's first studio album with his group Origin, it is clear that he has made a transition from his electric fusion style to straight-ahead acoustic jazz. On the opening track "Wigwam," Corea's signature percussive piano style has been replaced by a marimba's wooden tones. Most Corea fans should know that the piano master began his career on the drums, and his natural love of the mallet instruments makes logical sense. Corea's piano is ever present, however, as Origin proves to be the pianist's most traditional ensemble to date.
Featuring promising young instrumentalists like Steve Davis (trombone), Steve Wilson (saxophone, reeds), and Avishai Cohen (bass), as well as veteran Bob Sheppard (saxophone), Corea's assemblage tackles an array of stylistic challenges with great aplomb. From the danceable Latin feel of "Armando's Tango" to the down-home swing of "Early Afternoon Blues," the ensemble stamps a confident mark on each of Corea's intricate compositions. Drummer Jeff Ballard is a welcome addition to the group, with his sensitive coloration on such works as the chamber-like "Before Your Eyes" and the complex "The Spinner." Other highlights by this refreshing group include the swinging "L.A. Scenes" and the driving closer "Awakening."
