Spiegel is a cycle of seven orchestral works "Spiegel" and is mentioned in a few surveys as a key representative of a style known as "field music". (…) Not that moods or humour are excluded: near the middle of the cycle, horns break out into punctuated calls of fifths, which gradually morph into a sort of demented "oom-pah" band. Perhaps Ligeti was recalling this (among other things, of course) in the car-horn overture of Le Grand Macabre. But there are also moments of astonishing delicary, and above all that sense of bold self-confidence, of striking out, yes, of wonder, that characterises so much of the music of this time. And by the way, the spectralist experience the on is just about unthinkable without it. To sum up, this is hugely influential music, surely, but it deserves to be heard on its own terms, for within those terms these scores work wonderfully well.
