The Swedish soprano Camilla Tilling here performs songs by Franz Schubert, accompanied by Paul Rivinius. The disc includes some of Schubert's best-known songs, such as the carefree An Silvia, the serene Litanei, and the first Suleika song. The programme features great changes in emotion: from the portrayals of the joy and despair of young love in Bei dir allein! and Lied des Florio, to the Gothic drama of Der Zwerg and the despondency of Totengräbers Heimweh.
As well as having a highly successful opera career, Camilla Tilling has made a name for herself in concert and in recital. Her previous recording for BIS – the Strauss recital Rote Rosen (BISSACD1709) – was met with great critical acclaim.

Reviews: Camilla Tilling is primarily a Mozart-Handel soprano, though she has also sung Oscar in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera and Mélisande in Debussy’s opera. Here she gives us a recital of Schubert songs, perkily and crisply sung, with equally perky, crisp accompaniments by Paul Rivinius.
I was struck particularly by Tilling’s vocal control. She has a pleasant, light flicker-vibrato of the sort not often heard nowadays, though I’ve been hearing more sopranos with it lately than in the previous decade, and a good sense of dramatic phrasing. By this I mean that she knows how to hold back the voice, occasionally draining it of vibrato, how to build a phrase from the simplest cell note, and how to carry through the voice regardless of tessitura with excellent placement of the tone. She is also a fairly good interpreter, not on the level of Sharon Rostorf-Zamir or Bethany Beardslee, but excellent in setting the proper mood of each song. All of these are very strong attributes in her favor.
On the debit side, her German diction is not particularly crisp—either that, or the hybrid SACD sound covers it somewhat. Sadly, this is not an uncommon fault among singers in the soubrette-coloratura range; proper tone placement, and negotiating those tricky passages around the break, are often of greater import than diction. Perhaps they could do themselves a favor and listen to such singers as Rita Streich, Gwen Catley, or Elisabeth Schumann. They knew how to do both. If one can overlook this, however, one will enjoy this recital. The songs are well chosen to illustrate Tilling’s strengths (phrasing, coloration, etc.) and minimize the drama. Gretchen am Spinnrade is one of the most serious songs in this collection, although I’ve heard other sopranos make more of both this and the two Suleika songs. Tilling’s one interpretive gem here is Der Zwerg, sung with both the impeccable vocal control I came to admire in her earlier songs but also with a dramatic intensity I wouldn’t have suspected of her.
Considering her particular strengths as a singer, I am a little surprised that Tilling doesn’t attempt either Hirt aus dem Felsen or Auf dem Ström, but there are some gems here nonetheless.
