Calvin Russell is one of those rare songwriters that comes along every now and then and just knocks you square off your feet. First, you find yourself wondering, 'why on earth have I never heard of this guy before?'. Secondly, when you listen to his music, there is a certain 'grit' to it which automatically gives you some idea of the hard life and paths that this man travelled. His songwriting mentor was Townes Van Zandt and assuming you know one of the greatest songwriters of the second-half of the 20th Century, that should already grab your attention. However, the style of their songwriting is very different. While Van Zandt is renowned for the excellent poetic and gothic edge featured in his lyrics and general stellar quality songwriting in such celebrated ballads as Pancho and Lefty and If I Needed You, Calvin Russell's song are simpler but somehow harder, with an 'edge' to them, which sounds like they have been soaked in whisky and many years of hard living.
Out of all of his albums, so far I have listened to 'Soldier', 'Crack in Time', 'Dream of the Dog' and 'Songs from the Fourth World' but 'Soldier' is my favourite because there is not one bad song on this album.
From the opening album title track Soldier which immediately grabs your attention, through to the great blues rocker Rats & Roaches, through to I Dreamed I Saw - one of the best songs I have heard in years - to the foot-tappin' bass-thumpin' album closer This is Your World, Calvin reaches out through your stereo, grabs you buy the neck and makes you takes notes. ~Amazon
