California Guitar Trio - A Christmas Album (2002)

Not that there is an abundance of progressive rock-tinged acoustic guitar trios among the ranks, but this aggregation stands tall among its peers as the guitarists' inventiveness surges forward with this altogether warmhearted reckoning of Christmas carols and other pleasantries. The guitarists' nimble yet at times forceful approach is wholly evident during their highly rhythmic spin on "Jingle Bells." They perform the classic "Greensleeves" with a sensitive, chamber-like approach while also tackling the Lennon/Ono favorite "Happy X-Mas (War Is Over)." However, part of the magic resides within the trio's ability to delve into the inherent frameworks of each song, while also reformulating themes and rhythms into personalized statements. Essentially, the artists have produced a rather poignant Christmas outing, awash with interweaving lines and lilting harmonies, as they complement their superior artisanship and forward-thinking deployments with a cheerfully rendered collection of holiday favorites.

This is an excellent holiday album that features really nice guitar arrangements of many favorites. I like that they include many songs that are familiar but that may not be the songs that are played to death on the radio each year. If you are able to appreciate the complexity of the playing, you will be amazed. If you are not, you will still enjoy the beauty of the music. Songs from this album have gotten more than 30 million plays on Pandora. If you are looking for a nice, instrumental, holiday album, you can't miss with this one. The version of "Carol of the Bells" and "For Unto Us A Child is Born" from Handel's Messiah are worth the price of the album. "Oh Christmas Tree" and "What Child is This-Greensleeves" are well worn standards that come to life in their hands" Their version of "Jingle Bells" is different but easy to appreciate. An excellent version of John Lennon's "Happy Christmas" is also included. A highlight of the album is "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring" in which they employ a technique called "Circulation" in which each guitar plays a single note of the melody. They explained this to the audience when we saw them in concert. It is amazing to think that this tune, which features fast triplets, is being played by three guitars with each playing a single note of each triplet. The timing and execution of this tune is unfathomable. When I saw them play the tune, I looked to see if I could see one guitarist playing the tune but it was not so, Each one played a perfectly timed single note and together it made the melody to "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring". A song ended up being a favorite of mine is perhaps the only song on the album with which I was not familiar. It is "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" and comes from a movie by the same title starring David Bowie. I am not sure how to describe it other than to say that it is ethereal sounds very "English" to me. The CGT is a little known gem. They are incredible players and this album is a gift to us all. Check out out.
