Deep and of a beautiful timbre voice pouring down powerfully and with inspiration, artistic intuition along with the virtuosic technique permit Paata Burchuladze to create vivid vocal images both in opera and in a concert programme. These qualities were of the major importance for the jury during Paata Burchuladze performance at the 7th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1982 — the young singer received then the first prize and a golden medal. Burchuladze is in perfect command of the principles of the Russian vocal school, which includes artist's emotional experience and the ability for the transformation. Not by chance the reviewers of his concerts in England unanimously called the singer "a genuinely Russian bass" completely in line with the "demands of the Russian school".
The plastics of his musical phraze let the listener vividly imagine Ivan Susanin, wise, devotedly in love with his Motherland; Aleko, torn by doubts, seized with passion and jealousy; noble Prince Gremin.
After listening to Burchuladze in "Boris Godunov" the outstanding conductor Herbert von Karajan exclaimed: "He is a second Shalyapin!"
A Georgian singer Paata Burchuladze addressed himself to a Russian song. Together with the Yurlov Choir he recorded songs which by rights belong to the "treasury" of the musical culture of the Russian people. Most of the songs evoke in our memory the name of F. Shalyapin, his interpretation of the songs. Burchuladze worked over the programme possessing already high professionalism and culture, being a real master of his art.
In the interview given to the Soviet TV Luciano Pavarotti said: "For twenty years of my professional career for the first time I have met a young bass singer of such a great talent. I have no doubts that he will enter the opera art history as one of the outstanding vocalists of all the times…".
