Released in 1997, Bad Religion was the third album from Brazen Abbot, the melodic rock group formed by ex-Baltimoore guitarist Nikolo Kotzev. Kotzev was always more than just a superb guitarist, as his songwriting and keyboard playing in Brazen Abbot clearly proves. For the band's third incarnation, Kotzev was joined by a pair of Europe members (Ian Haughland and Mic Michaeli), and on vocals Thomas Vikstrom (ex-Candlemass), Goran Edman (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), and none other than former Rainbow and one-time Deep Purple singer Joe Lynn Turner. I tend to prefer the later Brazen Abbot albums (particularly Guilty as Sin with Jorn Lande), but these early Brazen Abbot releases are very impressive. Kotzev manages to take the classic Rainbow sound and incorporate elements of other classic bands (think Deep Purple and Journey) as well as more theatrical arrangements. The melodies are impeccable and the musicianship is just as impressive. As to the vocals - he's got Joe Lynn Turner! What more do I have to say? Actually, Vikstrom and especially Edman also turn in impressive performances. Highlights of Bad Religion include "Day of the Eagle" (not a Robin Trower cover), "Wings of a Dream" and "Empire of the Sun", but really there isn't a weak moment on the entire album. If you're a fan of 80's style melodic rock, you really must check out Brazen Abbot, and Bad Religion is not to be missed. If you're new to the band, I'd recommend starting with Live & Learn and working forward, though starting with My Resurrection and working backwards might be just as effective. Either way, it shouldn't take more than one album before you're a Brazen Abbot fan for life!Musicians:
