I haven't enjoyed a set of performances of the Hungarian Dances so much since I played them with the local youth orchestra at the age of 14. In a way, Ivan Fischer's version of these ever-popular classics is as valid an essay in stylistic restoration as the most scholarly period-instrument performance of Bach or Handel. As Fischer informs us in his notes, Brahms was strongly drawn to Hungarian music in its unvarnished original form, and his carefully ornamented piano transcriptions of gipsy and Magyar music show that he was deeply concerned to preserve the character of this unique musical language. Unfortunately, as with jazz, once notated the music becomes fossilized, a mere imprint of the living thing it once was. In the orchestrated versions, what little of the genuine Hungarian flavour that remained was rarified out of existence; what Fischer and his musicians have tried to do is restore something of the vitality and spontaneity of true folk-music.
The transcriptions have been reworked and in one or two movements an improvised cimbalom part has been added, played by a well-known Hungarian musician, Kalman Balogh. Not a record for purists perhaps, but I found the results invigorating and thought-provoking. Did Brahms intend that the 'Hungarian' elements in his symphonic works should sound something like this? What, I wonder, would Fischer's musicians make of the `gipsy' theme in the finale of the Second Piano Concerto, or that wonderful Rondo alla zingarese from the G minor Piano Quartet? - S.J. Gramophone, March 1987.
