Back in the late 60s and early 70s, Black Widow was one of the most prominent bands, experimenting with a mix of progressive rock, psychedelic music and hard rock / heavy metal. The band came to a premature end in the 1970s, but Clive Jones, the only constant in the band, has revived the band, together with Geoff Griffith. The band once caused stirs with occult topics and live onstage sacrifices and were major competitors to Black Sabbath for the throne of dark heavy masters of rock. Unfortunately, just as their star was rising, the band stopped working and they were relegated to cult status. On their return in the new millennium, we have a band made up only Clive Jones and Geoff Griffith. It was up for debate if this duo could produce the magic of the old days. The short answer would be yes. While the production undoubtedly sounds new and some of the keyboards don’t sound as vintage as back in the day, the magic has remained. The occult topics are as strong and disturbing as ever, while the music is as heavy as in the past, with plenty of atmospheric segments as well. Perhaps the album could even do with a touch more atmosphere to prepare us for the heavier parts and to intensify the occult topics. With Geoff and Clive exchanging in the role of vocalist, it never gets old and boring. Add to the mix Tony Martin and Kay Garret and you've got a very powerful album vocally as well.
If you listen to the early Black Widow albums and even this release, you can see that Black Widow can still give younger heavy dark progressive bands, like Arena and IQ, a run for their money. The music is still wrapped in a shroud of mystery, while the lyrics are disturbing as always. But don’t discount the lyrics as mere Satan worshipping bollocks. Dig a bit deeper and you’ll find they’re very relevant to the current situation in the world and to the real dark forces which are at work nowadays.
Sleeping with Demons is a majestic return of the occult masters. With it, they prove that they are still very much relevant and have a lot to contribute in the world of music. While they are no longer as big as in their heyday, they are just as strong in their delivery.
