In memory of Carmelo Bene's 10 years death
The force of on artist lies in his power to renew. Carmelo Bene is proof of this. Thanks to everything he has done, he is able to wake a break with everything he has done. At present he is mapping out a new route for himself. He is building a new, active relationship with music for all of us. First of all, each image bears, at the beginning, elements of sight and elements of sound. For a long time, by «making» theater or cinema, Carmelo Bene has been dealing with both elements at the time (colors of scenary. visual organization of stage direction, characters seen and heard at the same time).
At present he is becoming more and more interested in the element of sound alone. He creates a point from it which pulls the rest of the image along with it; the image has been completely transformed into sound. No longer is one character or another speaking-sound itself has become a character as the element of sound likewise becomes a character. Thus, Carmelo Bene carries on with his plan to be the "protagonist", or operator rather than actor, but he carries it on under new conditions. It is no longer the voice which whispers or screams or hammers away in order to express some emotion or other; the whisper itself becomes a voice, the scream a voice, while at the same time the corresponding emotions (affections) become modes, vocal modes. And all these voices and modes communicate from
the inside. Thus we have the renewed role of variations of speeds, and also play-back, which Carmelo Bene has never considered a means to make things easier, but rather an instrument of creation.
