Among music lovers Croatian conductor Lovro von Matačić is mostly known as a great Bruckner exegete. However he was a champion in the Eastern Europe music too. His repertoire included symphonic and opera compositions by Tchaikovsky, Janáček, Korte, Smetana etc. The recording of the Smetana's symphonic cycle "Má Vlast" ("My homeland") performed by NHK Symphony Orchestra (Tokyo) under Matačić is presented here. Matačić has four recordings of "Má Vlast", two of them are rather easy-to-buy - this one and the later with ORF-Sinfonieorchester, that was recently issued by Weitblick and Orfeo. The third is the recording with Czech Philharmonic. It was issued on Fachmann FKM CDR 157/8 S (2) and for years I cannot find an opportunity to buy it. And the fourth is the Zagreb Philharmonic recording. Both NHK and ORF recordings are beyond all praise. Howbeit, I like the first one a little more. Not least because the Austrian Orchestra in my opinion doesn't have such lovely and delicate strings and woodwinds, that especially noticeable in Vyšehrad.Tracklisting:
