Three 20th-century orchestral scores, Bartók’s Two Pictures, Debussy’s Jeux and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, all dating from 1910-13 and all linked (as the detailed CD booklet explains), are brought to life in the hands of two exceptional French pianists. The central interest is the ballet Jeux. One of the world’s outstanding Debussy interpreters, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet has added to his complete Chandos recordings with his own transcription for two pianos. Written late in Debussy’s life for Nijinsky, Jeux involves an emotionally erotic and harmonically daring game of tennis. Bavouzet and his well-matched partner, François-Fréderic Guy, play with nimble grace, capturing the works wit and mystery. This gripping album is dedicated to Pierre Boulez, guru and enabler, for his 90th birthday.

Review by Fiona Maddocks, The Guardian

Before the widespread availability of phonograph recordings, composers frequently promoted their orchestral music through transcriptions for piano, in many cases for two pianos if the music's complexity demanded it. Igor Stravinsky once played his transcription of his ballet Le Sacre du printemps with Claude Debussy, who described it as "a beautiful nightmare," and apart from a handful of controversial orchestral performances, it was heard most often in the keyboard reduction until after WWI. Since Le Sacre's centennial anniversary in 2013, the two-piano transcription has become quite popular again, and it is a favorite showpiece among virtuosos who enjoy its challenges and its flashiness, so it's no surprise that Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and François-Frédéric Guy have chosen it as the main work of this 2015 Chandos release. The other selections, Béla Bartók's Two Pictures, transcribed for two pianos by Zoltán Kocsis, and Debussy's Jeux, transcribed by Bavouzet, don't have the historical significance of Stravinsky's transcription, but their place on this program is justified by the importance of the composers, and the fact that these works were also first heard in 1913. This album is strongly recommended to fans of music for two pianos, though most other listeners will prefer the full versions for orchestra.

    Review by Blair Sanderson, Allmusic.com

A couple of years after the centenary of the infamous first performance of The Rite of Spring we have a spate of recordings of Stravinsky’s piano four-hands version. What a fly-on-the-wall moment it must have been when he first introduced Diaghilev and his fellow Ballets Russes minions to what was soon to become the most iconic ballet of the 20th century. Still, it has to be asked whether this ersatz version – produced for study rehearsal purposes – has any more than documentary or practical value.

My first experience of the two-piano option was many years ago from Peter Donohoe and Martin Roscoe, and this is how I’ve performed the work myself. The two-piano format has the obvious advantages of liberating the players technically, since it’s impossible to create a quasi-orchestral range of colour when competing physically for the middle range on a single keyboard. It also means that the numerous places where Stravinsky was forced to adapt or omit crucial layers of the texture can be corrected and/or enhanced.

First and foremost, François-Frédéric Guy and Jean-Efflam Bavouze know how much, or rather how little, the folk-based material can be bent before the idiom is lost. Then they have really done their homework in terms of the instruments at their disposal. True, there are different and further options to the ones they take. But the colours, dynamics and textural finesse of this performance, enhanced by superbly lifelike recording, are breathtaking. The couplings here are Bavouzet’s resourceful transcription of Debussy’s Jeux and Zoltán Kocsis’s of Bartók’s Two Pictures. More brilliant playing here, though whether either transcription will catch on with other pianistic teams is an open question.
