This CD collects three different recordings from different occasions and with different artists as well: Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto, op. 14, the Cello concerto, op. 22, and the Piano concerto, op. 38.Requested by 13mh13
The Violin concerto features Isaac Stern, Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in a classic 1964 performance - still the one to have despite Hahn's hailed recording.
The Cello concerto was recorded in 1989 with Yo-Yo Ma and David Zinman. The orchestra is Baltimore symphony.
The Piano concerto, finally, is also a classic recording (1965): John Browning and George Szell, with The Cleveland Orchestra.
All these three recordings are first rate, both in terms of sound and in terms of interpretations - this is true even of Ozawa/Zinman's late recording.
The only rival to consider is Leonard Slatkin's recordings of the same works: Barber: Violin Concerto; Cello Concerto; Piano Concerto. In the piano concerto, Slatkin has Browning as soloist, as in Szell's recording. But Szell's classic is the one to have. And the two other works in Slatkin's recording have lesser artists than those in the current collection. Thus I conclude that the present CD is the one to have.L. Johan @ Amazon.com
