In May 2006 members of Musica Antiqua Köln played Johann Sebastian Bach’s Die Kunst der Fuge (The Art of Fugue) for this film project in various spaces of a museum building designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, close to the German town of Düsseldorf. The building is made of concrete, glass, and steel. The unique mix of reduction and minimalism on one hand and visual variety and opulence on the other hand makes it a perfect setting for a performance of Bach’s Art of Fugue.
Since Reinhard Goebel founded it in 1973, Musica Antiqua Köln was the German ensemble for Early Music. The interpretation of The Art of Fugue pervades the history of the Musica Antiqua Cologne Ensemble not just because of its countless worldwide performances but also with its recording in 1986 which set a worldwide benchmark. In the year of disbandment the Ensemble recorded the opus again for the film.
In the film different parameters like shot size, shot length, perspective, rhythm or lighting, correspond with the musical form and dramaturgy.
