This reissue of 1982 recordings of C.P.E. Bach's concerto for harpsichord and piano Wq. 47 (Helm 479) and sonatina Wq. 109 (H. 453), and an undated recording of the concerto for 2 harpsichords Wq. 46 (H. 408), would be a worthwhile disc even without the bargain-basement price. The Wq. 47 concerto is uniquely important in C.P.E.'s output–it is the last concerto the composer wrote–but this disc seems to be the only readily available recording at this writing! Happily, the performance is splendid, as is that of the sonatina.
The Wq. 46 concerto, which sounds like an older recording than that of the other two works (and is an ADD recording; the others are fully digital), is not bad, either, but is a decidedly low-key reading compared with the 1986 recording by Musica Antiqua Koeln (Archiv, now apparently out of print). The sound of the Collegium Aureum is more lush, their tempos more leisurely in the outer movements than those of MAK, and their playing strikes me as more "middle of the road" and less inclined to risks than the activist rendition of MAK. MAK seems to have the C.P.E. idiom down a bit better than Collegium Aureum, but that does not invalidate the latter's performance or make me hesitant to recommend it to anyone who has not heard this concerto (which also seems to be currently hard to find on disc, sadly enough).
The style of Emanuel Bach, by turns humorous and bordering on pathos, is well represented by this CD. I shopped around for a recording of Wq. 47 for some time in the US before finding this one on Amazon UK. I can say it was worth the search.
