Following their album of French music for two pianos, father and son Vladimir and Vovka Ashkenazy revel in their musical heritage with this dazzling programme by the great composers of Russia, with Rachmaninov's two-piano Suite No.1 at its heart. Three of the works have been arranged by Vovka Ashkenazy himself, including Mussorgsky's Night On The Bald Mountain and the album's virtuosic finale - Borodin's Polovtsian Dances from his opera Prince Igor. His two-piano arrangement of Glinka's lilting Valse-fantaisie is itself based on Sergei Lyapunov's arrangement for four hands. The two works originally written for two pianos are Rachmaninov's poetic Suite no 1, Op. 5 "Fantaisie Tableaux" (which the young composer dedicated to another giant of Russian music - Piotr Tchaikovsky) and the Fantasy in A minor by Rachmaninov's contemporary at the Moscow Conservatoire, Scriabin.

The father-and-son team of Vladimir and Vovka Ashkenazy recorded an unusual group of French Impressionist two-piano pieces, and even for this collection of Russian favorites they manage to diverge from the norm. The elder Ashkenazy has studiously avoided trying to turn his son into a clone of himself, and that effort even continues here: it is really Vovka who controls the turns of events, not Vladimir. Only two pieces on the program are duo piano works, the early Suite No. 1 for two pianos, Op. 5, of Rachmaninov, and the short Fantasy in A minor for two pianos of Scriabin. The rest of the music is arranged from orchestral originals by Vovka, in one case in collaboration with Sergey Lyapunov. It's not a case of lead and subsidiary pianos, but the arrangements are crafted so as to give equal time to each player, and the whole tends to reflect Vovka's somewhat more subdued style; this is emphatically not a Vladimir Ashkenazy showcase. The whole thing is artfully done, with Borodin's "Polovtsian Dances" from Prince Igor, not a work especially suited to piano transcription, substituting a range of piano interactions for the vivid orchestral colors. An enjoyable walk through some familiar Russian tunes, turning the problem of celebrity into a way of keeping the music fresh.
