EMI Classics pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and Virgin Classics' string quartet, the Artemis, have joined their formidable musical forces to record two of the most beautiful piano quintets of the Romantic chamber music repertoire. Their collaboration makes for what will certainly be considered a landmark recording, bringing a new vigour to these well-known masterpieces. The programme couples 2 major piano quintets by Brahms and Schumann. Brahms' Piano Quintet in F minor Op.34 is the composer's only piano quintet and is considered one of his finest compositions. The work began life as a string quintet, later evolving into a sonata for two pianos, before taking its final form in 1866. Of Schumann's Piano Quintet in E Op 44, Clara Schumann, who premiered it said: "A glorious piece, extremely brilliant and effective. Schumann's sole composition for piano quintet was composed in 1842, a year practically devoted to the composition of chamber works for piano and strings.

Leif Ove Andsnes has an uncanny knack of revealing the inner truth of the music he plays without recourse to excessive gimmickry. He also has exquisite taste when it comes to choosing his chamber music collaborators, as this pairing of the two cornerstones of the piano quintet repertoire demonstrates.

Schumann’s Quintet has become the most famous of his chamber works, with its boundless energy and melodic generosity. Andsnes and the Artemis let the notes speak for themselves, never lingering too lovingly on mere details. It’s an approach that serves the work well, and an ideal instrumental balance helps illuminate the work’s compelling textures throughout.

It’s a similar story in the Brahms. Andsnes and the Artemis are alive to all the possibilities in the pregnant opening phrases of each movement and maintain the intensity of the impetuous passion implicit in this youthful music. The Brahms hasn’t fared as well on disc as the Schumann and this recording of it can certainly take its place among the finest. As for the Schumann, it’s undoubtedly up there with the best.

Before issuing this recording, the Artemis Quartett had already made clean, tight, and driven performances of several Beethoven quartets and a Verklärte Nacht that could seduce even the most chaste listener, and Leif Ove Andsnes was already established as one of the finest living pianists. But something about the combination of the two here doesn't work. Naturally, the Artemis and Andsnes play with a cogent ensemble and unified interpretation, but their interpretations are surprisingly cool in the fast movements. The fugue that concludes Schumann's quintet and the Scherzo in the center of Brahms' work are more like well-balanced machines than aesthetic dramas, and the slow movements come off as cold. Certainly these are very listenable performances, but they may not warrant repeated listenings. Recorded in Teldex Studios in Berlin, the sound here is bright and crisp, if a bit lacking in depth.
