This fine work, in the perfect Classical tradition, is from late in Piccinni’s French period. It was composed in 1783 and was performed in Paris regularly until 1836 and throughout the rest of Europe until about 1830. Piccinni keeps the plot moving at a fine clip, running one number into the next without a glitch and (especially in the third act) effectively using the chorus to add to the excitement. His writing for the solo voices is stirring in a Gluckian way, but elements of his Italian roots show up in the vocal line and melodic inspiration as well.
The plot is simple and familiar, with variations: Dido and Aeneas are in love, but King Iarbas has threatened Dido’s reign unless she marries him. He goes so far as to show up at her court in disguise to re-warn her of this issue, explaining that a Trojan king is intolerable. Iarbas and Aeneas argue bitterly. In the middle act, Aeneas tells Dido’s sister, Elise, that he must leave Carthage, hoping Elise will break the news to Dido; but when the pair meets again, Dido acts as if all is well between them and Aeneas says nothing. Iarbas enters and tells Dido that Aeneas is a traitor, but she refuses to believe him.
In the last act we hear Dido’s concern about Aeneas, who is in battle with Iarbas; after Aeneas wins, he tells Dido of his plans to leave. She goes vaguely ballistic, but her rage is mixed with angst. Aeneas waffles until the ghost of his father tells him he must go. When he does, Dido curses him and kills herself. In other words, the 125-minute opera is made up of introspections and confrontations by and among the three principals. All three roles are long and filled with emotion; Dido is only off-stage for about 15 minutes throughout the entire work.
This performance, taped live in Bari in December, 2001 in front of an audience that should have been more appreciative, has a lot to recommend it. The major drawbacks are the voice qualities of the two men. The tenor (Aeneas), Daniel Galvez-Vallejo, proves himself a fine artist–enthusiastic, totally involved, as good at exclamatory passages as he is at more lyrical ones. Indeed, he’s a complete Aeneas, filled with self-doubts and obsessions; but his throaty vocal production does not fall nicely on the ear. Much the same can be said for baritone Davide Damiani as Iarbas: he’s wonderfully in-the-role, but the sound is somewhat less than ingratiating. I got over these hurdles quickly because of the singers’ commitment, and I recommend that you do too.
The true find here is soprano Sibongile Mngoma as Dido. She’s thrilling and has a voice to admire as well. The rest of the cast is good, the orchestra plays well, and Arnold Bosman’s leadership is suitably exciting. The voice/orchestral balance favors the latter, and that’s a pity, since the three key singers work so hard and are so good. But give this a try; it’s entirely worth reviving and is on a par with many of Gluck’s works from the same period.–Robert Levine
