German act ARGOS initially started out as a solo project by multi-instrumentalist and composer Thomas Klarmann, an experienced musician who started out in prog and fusion bands in the 70's. He abandoned the progressive part of the music scene more and more as time went by though, concentrating on jazz, but when he discovered the new progressive movement in the mid 90's spearheaded by acts like Flower Kings and Spock's Beard, the passion for making and performing progressive music returned as well.
Argos - A Seasonal Affair (2015)
After their very good album from 2012 Cruel Symmetry, German band Argos are back with A Seasonal Affair. This CD was originally supposed to come out last fall, but was postponed for about six months. I don't know the reason for this, but I can imagine that the band wanted to work even more on their music, since this is an incredibly great sounding record.
Argos is band clearly attached to the great seventies Prog bands sound, while updating it to 2015 standards. References can be made with a few bands from that incredible era for Progressive Rock, but I must make it clear that Argos is far from being a "Copy Cat" band. A Seasonal Affair offers the listener a very original collection of songs. Sound and style wise, we can be reminded of Caravan (some of the lead vocals are pretty close to a mix of Pie Hastings and Richard Sinclair) but also of Gentle Giant (a song like Black Cat would not be out of place on an album like Acquiring The Taste). When they crank it up a bit, even Van Der Graaf Generator can com to mind. Add to that occasional hints of Jazz and you get a record that will grow on you with repeated spins.
A Seasonal Affair is a jump forward for Argos, even though their previous music was all ready very good. Fans of Canterbury style Prog or Gentle Giant should really check them out.
A Seasonal Affair is certainly a definite candidate for my 2015 album of the year… and don't forget that Steven Wilson recently put out a very good CD.review by: Marc
