Anu Vehviläinen gave her début recital in Helsinki in spring 2000 to excellent reviews and has been giving recitals and performing chamber music actively for several years now. She has appeared at festivals in Finland and given concerts in France, Estonia and Poland (including the Szymanowski Festival in Zakopane). As a soloist she has appeared with the Mikkeli City Orchestra and is an active member of the TampereRaw chamber music ensemble.

The music of Karol Szymanowski (1882–1937)—especially the late works—must rank as some of the most overtly sensual, even sensuous, music ever written for the piano. To play this music well, one must be able to bring this quality out in the music. To do so, one must first master the considerable technical Read more Métopes are graceful and nimble, though they lack the type of quadruple pianissimos that are essential for this music’s strange and haunting quality—part of its major attraction. To shade in this extremely soft region of the instrument is to take one’s breath away—something that seems to be lacking in these performances. The Third Sonata is similar. There is something missing in its ever-seductive trills, in the intimacy of its opening, as there is something lacking in the momentum, or lack thereof, of the tumultuous fugue that ends the work. Though there are many fine qualities to Vehviläinen’s playing, there are important aspects of her readings of these works that are simply overlooked. For more carefully shaded and equally driving-at-the-correct-moment performances, I still prefer Piotr Anderszewski’s very fine recording (Virgin 45730) of both the Métopes and the Third Sonata, in addition to the Masques , which replace the Preludes, op. 1, on the current recording. Two other very fine recordings, by Roland Pöntinen (BIS 1137) playing the same repertoire as Anderszewski, plus a few selected mazurkas, and Martin Jones (Nimbus 1750) playing the complete piano works on four CDs, are equally attractive in their varied ways. If one is not acquainted with Szymanowski’s works, any of these recordings will provide excellent introductions to his wonderfully complex yet subtle music.
