This disc is a tour de force, a world premiere recording of stunning music splendidly performed. The unjustly obscure Antonio Maria Bononcini was appointed late in life to be maestro di cappella in Modena, a post which allowed him to pour his store of invention into two grand sacred works, a Mass and a Stabat Mater. Conductor Rinaldo Alessandrini engages deeply with the composer’s imagination, opening up his dense counterpoint and delicately binding together his vocal and obbligato lines.

The musical rhetoric of the Concerto Italiano is spellbinding, particularly when band and singers heighten gestures to surge powerfully towards a passage’s final cadence. However heated their delivery becomes – and the Stabat Mater does sizzle – the artists never rush. This is particularly crucial for bringing out Bononcini’s modulations and textures, which, because they shift rapidly, need space to breathe. In this regard contralto Sara Mingardo stands out: the suspense she builds in her Stabat Mater solo, as she sings of mingling her tears with Christ’s, is gripping.

Equally excellent is the sound quality. It was recorded live at the Wiener Konzerthaus, yet no hint of ambient rustling remains, and the engineers combine clarity, warmth and intimacy. It’s a performance that rewards many hearings.

Review by Berta Joncus, BBC Music Magazine *****

Antonio Maria Bononcini (1677-1726) was the younger brother of the celebrated opera composer Giovanni. Both studied in Bologna, relocated to Rome and thereafter flourished in Berlin and Vienna; Giovanni became Handel’s colleague in London, whereas Antonio eventually settled as the court maestro di cappella in Modena. His contrapuntally complex Stabat mater for four-part voices and strings has been recorded a few times before but never with the assured qualities of Concerto Italiano’s masterful performance – although there are a few brief moments of dodgy tuning from the violins in the opening chorus (the only blatant gremlin of this live recording made at Vienna’s Konzerthaus). Expressive arias such as the florid ‘Eia, mater, fons amoris’ are strikingly juxtaposed with diverse choral movements that range from affectionate charm (‘Virgo virginum praeclara’) to emotionally plaintive fugues of exemplary workmanship (‘Paridisi gloria’).

The unpublished five-part Mass has never been recorded before. Rinaldo Alessandrini praises its ‘synthesis between ecclesiastical and operatic styles’. Concerto Italiano’s lean strings and two assertive theorbos make a telling impact throughout the Mass, and the 17-strong Choir of Concerto Italiano sing precisely and expressively (a beautiful setting of Agnus Dei); movements sung by single voices include a sublime ‘Qui tollis’ and elsewhere there are some surprising sonorities, such as an inventive low trio for two tenors and bass (‘Domine Deus, Rex coelestis’). These distinguished performances reveal exactly the kind of unfairly neglected repertoire that the Early Music Revival was invented for.

    Review by David Vickers, Gramophone

Antonio Maria Bononcini (1677-1726) is less well known than his father Giovanni Maria and brother Giovanni, but the works recorded here reveal a composer of substance and considerable interest. His Mass in G minor, in its premiere recording and first modern performance, is a real find. At the time of its composition, probably somewhere close to 1700, it would have been considered unconventional if not just plain odd, in the extent to which it incorporated an intensely contrapuntal Germanic style with Italianate lyricism. In fact, Bononcini entirely dispensed with movements featuring vocal solos, the bread and butter of Baroque Italian liturgical music, in favor of elaborately contrapuntal interweaving of from two to five solo voices. There's nothing showy or academic about Bononcini's polyphonic writing in the Mass; the lines are supple and lyrically melodic. The result is gorgeously rich and shouldn't sound strange to modern ears. The album's eight soloists are all very fine, and several are standouts. Sara Mingardo's ripe contralto beautifully fills out the lines so low that they were most likely intended for a tenor rather than a castrato. Her remarkable duet with counter tenor Andrea Arrivabene, "Gratias agimus tibi," in which her voice contrasts in weight and depth with his, is one of the album's highlights. "Domine Deus, Rex coelistis," for two tenors and bass, is a marvel of lyrical counterpoint and structural elegance. Bass Salvo Vitale sings throughout with exceptional resonance and deep feeling.

The Stabat Mater in C minor is an overall less impressive work, not only because of the more conventional vocal writing, but because the long text on a single tragic theme is challenging to set with enough variety to provide musical contrast, without resorting to a contrasting tone that's unduly cheerful, and Bononcini doesn't quite pull it off. It's a work with many individual moments, though, that are lovely and even striking, and is especially a pleasure in a performance as excellent as this one. The chorus and orchestra of Concerto Italiano, expertly led by Rinaldo Alessandrini, sing and play with their characteristic attention to musical and textual detail. The sound of the live recording is clean, full, and realistic.
