Thrash Metal

Legendary Canadian, metal/thrash and premier act since the late 80s, Annihilator, has produced a 15th and indisputable, razor- sharp record through UDR Music.
In a recent interview with Rock ‘N’ Load ‘- ‘Jeff Waters’ confirmed that this latest masterpiece would once again see him take complete command of the song writing, all guitars and bass, engineering and producing as well as mixing and mastering. ‘Suicide Society’, is a crisp, ass whooping in technical perfection. However, ‘Waters’ is back on vocals, as he has done before on earlier Annihilator albums, but with a familiar sound re-emerging, reminiscent of the critically acclaimed “King Of The Kill”.
The title track ‘Suicide Society’ (new single and video) is ripped out instantly and denotes that “the human race is a disgrace and we’ve all gone fucking mad”. Powering, top end riffs and vocal harmonies; this track is a feast straight from the king’s table and shows the diversity in song writing and instrumental ingeniousness of ‘Waters’. It’s like he literally got his teeth into this track. It ends with chugging guitars and chants of the hope that “we will all come together”.
‘My Revenge’, all the atmosphere and inspiration of the 80s, comes to life, but is beautifully stripped and polished, unleashing mayhem and magic in 2015. Speed riffing is brutally thrashed to hell and back, which also gallops in and out of intricate solos.
However, ‘Snap’ is my stand out track! I love this song, Waters talks the talk (trust me, he CAN talk) with this anthem belting beast, snarly ‘Mustane’ vocals together with a low dangling riff that bridges a glorious chorus, evokes images of 1940s style detective stories; the rhythm and groove bass line is utter sexiness as you get lost in the booming depths of the drums, and the more I listen to this track the more I’m absolutely convinced, that ‘Waters’ enjoyed the sexiness of this one too.
‘Creepin Again’ highlights the absolute brilliance in ‘Waters’ song writing, and is an air guitarists temptation to let rip, even when people are watching. The reputation ‘Waters’ has built on being a premier guitarist shines, as does the vocals, which have a blending of ‘Hetfield – Staley’ going on; superb arrangements that produce tightness and conciseness throughout which is driven home through the right bluddy hammering the drums are taking.
‘Waters’ brings us back to thrash in ‘Narcotic Avenue’ which has a wonderful assortment of guitar arrangements and over lays, fast and furious hooks with true Annihilator brutality; your guts will feel turmoil. This will be an absolute crowd thriller played live, and may cause carnage in the mosh pit. ‘Break Enter’ and ‘The One You Serve’ feel like they are derived from the pits of hell and are befitting any horror film sound track, with chunky riffs, relentlessly bouncing your emotions and senses around, because you can’t help but notice the growth evolving from this band due to all the new sounds. It still feels every bit an ‘Annihilator’ record; however the diversity is mesmerising as he whizzes from old to new knocking you for six as you try to keep up with man!
I love the swingy groove intro into ‘Death Scent’ which in contrast is accompanied by demonic snarling vocals. This is the Annihilator sound that is well – safe. It still works for me however, even with the slippery breakdown which, thank God manifests into all hell breaking loose. The album closes with the slower offering ‘Every Minute’, showcasing the bad ass vocals and solos from ‘Waters’ and having spoken to the genius himself, it is absolutely clear that he put a little piece of his soul into this record.
The aptly named – ‘Suicide Society’ is a stark reminder of our chaotic times, and if that title alone doesn’t grab you, I don’t know what will. ‘Waters’ addresses some of the issues of our partially throttled planet today so is he ignorant to the plight of the human race? I think not. Also, Is he evolving as an artist? Yes, he certainly is, after all and I don’t care what anyone else thinks, ‘Jeff Waters’ IS Annihilator, and just as we grow and change as people, we are still who we are.
Due to the energy and enthusiasm of the band, this truly terrific album, which is thrashy and radio friendly, will go down in neck breaking style, played live.
