Sony has packaged this album like a 1980s disc of music to snog by, but the saxophonist Amy Dickson’s new release is an intriguing and entirely serious collection of recent works by Australian composers, works she did much to create. The title work, premiered by Dickson in 2012, is a late score by Peter Sculthorpe. The first movement is sun drenched and full of yearning, the saxophone soaring over a teeming orchestra; the second is a more unsettled expression of homesickness. Ross Edwards’s concerto entitled the Full Moon Dances – recorded, unlike the rest, live in concert – is elegantly scored and evocative, especially in the opening Mantra, in which the saxophone interweaves with the orchestral soloists, and in the pulsing, almost Stravinsky-esque First Ritual Dance. But it is Brett Dean’s 2007 flute concerto The Siduri Dances, here arranged for saxophone, which offers the most wide-ranging demonstration of Dickson’s mastery with its note-bending, buzzing effects and hectic rhythms.Review by Erica Jeal, The Guardian
Sydney-born, London-based classical saxophonist Amy Dickson’s latest release is a terrific musical tribute to her home country, comprising premiere recordings of three attractive, contrasting works for saxophone and orchestra by Australian composers.
Peter Sculthorpe’s haunting Island Songs and Ross Edwards’s vibrant, evocative Full Moon Dances were written for Dickson; Brett Dean’s violently ecstatic The Siduri Dances was originally scored for flute and strings but arranged for soprano saxophone with Dickson’s involvement. What binds all three is a narrative if not strictly programmatic quality; this in turn allows Dickson to exploit her abilities as an instrumentalist-storyteller.
Scored for solo soprano and alto saxophones with the accompaniment of strings and percussion, Sculthorpe’s late elegiac masterpiece rings with thunder and birdsong as Dickson’s burnished chant celebrates and mourns in equal measure. Although introduced by hesitant, muted strings, Dean’s The Siduri Dances (a reference to the hedonistic goddess of the epic Gilgamesh) by contrast palpitates with a frenzied elation and violent energy that Dickson seems gleefully to relish.
Edwards’s richly scored Full Moon Dances for alto saxophone and orchestra combines elegy and elation, its five movements bringing together birdsong, chant and other sound features from different cultures. Here, Dickson is the Moon Goddess incarnate, as full of abandon in the brilliant ‘First Ritual Dance’ as she is serene and inscrutable in ‘Water-Moon’, a homage to the Chinese goddess of compassion. The Sydney Symphony Orchestra, whether under Benjamin Northey in the first two works or under Migel Harth-Bedoya in the third, play with all the energy and precision for which they have become world-renowned.Review by William Yeoman, Gramophone
