This circular release by the well-known Finnish band Amorphis does not surprise a lot, doesn't surprise at all actually, yet doesn't fail to meet the expectations. They have been swimming the "same moonlight waters", as Nightwish would have said, since their Silent Waters full-length came out, which is not a bad thing but they have lacked the element of surprise ever since.
Clean vocals and death growls are blended in Amorphis' magically enchanted melodies and serve as storytellers. The alternating way in which they mostly narrate depends on the intensity and the message of the tale and, consequently, both clean vocals and death growls describe the Shades of Gray, mostly harsh vocals sing the intense and sorrowful Nightbird's Song and the clean vocals have totally assumed the role of telling about the dawn of A New Day. Not as brutal as the death growls that can be found throughout the entire Death discography, Joutsen's growling can be described as more refined rather than soft while the clean vocals can, more or less, be compared to the ones done by Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica), Tobi Zoltan (ex-Dreamscape) or Marco Benevento (Kamlath), although Joutsen's voice sounds way more intense and more melodic.
As for the instruments, the melodic guitars contributes to the trance-like atmosphere that persists throughout the album; their relatively unique sound is still somehow reminiscent to Sonata Arctica's Dream Thieves, Dreamscape's More Than and Darkestrah's Cult Tengri. The drums are energetic, switch the rhythms as often as possible and provide the album with a strong amount of high quality, intelligent and effortful beats that sound perfect along with the resonant cymbals. And for the spell to be complete, the Circle has been musically adorned with keyboards, flutes, a cello and a saxophone.
Yet, as all the other tales, this one also has an end, marked by the soothing song titled A New Day, which has the significance of a new beginning but, as the circle that this album is, any new beginning means just other Shades of Gray that would fade away once the sun has risen, repeating the cycle over and over again. Nevertheless, I cannot help wondering: Are Amorphis afraid of searching for answers unquestioned before? Or have they just gotten used to following the same pattern? I guess that only Under the Red Cloud could provide the answer and reveal the fog.
