Festive baroque or sparkling virtuoso: the trumpet has many faces, and it is still an absolute exception to find a woman among the great virtuosos of this instrument. The young British trumpeter Alison Balsom is one of these exceptional phenomena. In 2006, Alison Balsom was crowned "Young British Classical Performer of the Year" by the quality watchdogs of classical music; the British Gramophone magazine also awarded her a Gramophone Award 2006. Their current album "Caprice" combines exotic and high virtuosity, lyrical and romantic.
It is well known that the aria of the Queen of the Night from Mozart's "Magic Flute" is a nightmare for sopranos. When Maurice André once presented a trumpet version of this work peppered with coloratura, one was surprised. Alison Balsom now follows in the footsteps of the great Frenchman - with his own transcription. And she goes many steps further: Mozart's "Rondo alla Turca", Piazzolla's "Libertango", Rachmaninoff's "Vocalis", a Paganini caprice or Debussy's "Syrinx": the young artist draws a wide arc through literature in order to elicit all the colours of her trumpet, from colourful sparkle to soft golden tones, together with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. In the middle of the programme: Seven Spanish songs by De Falla: Fiery Spanish exoticism in effective, highly virtuoso arrangements from the pen of the great Italian contemporary Luciano Berio.
