This is Brendel's third Haydn record in recent years (the other two, also on Philips, are 9500 774, 8/81 and 6514 317, 11/83), and it offers three sonatas and two oddities in superlative performances, beautifully recorded. The lack of dynamics in the B minor means Haydn expected it to be played mainly on the harpsichord, but this leaves Brendel free to find his own dynamics which he does with impeccable taste. The robust outer movements in fact are well suited to a piano, and the central minuet offers a delicate contrast. The D major, later, and definitely for piano, consists only of a long set of variations and a short quick finale. The E minor is much the best known of these sonatas and Brendel makes it sound what it is, one of Haydn's very greatest sonatas. The Fantasia is a humorous study in modulation; Haydn tries his perky theme in a surprising number of different keys with irresistible good humour.
I have not seen the sleeve and have no information about the prettily innocent Adagio. I see that Grove lists it dubiously as being perhaps an arrangement but doesn't say of what. Brendel makes all the music sound delightfully new with his sensitively-shaped phrasing and unflagging control of the relationship between each section of each movement.– Gramophone
