    Since his 2007 Cleveland International Piano Competition victory, Alexander Ghindin has attracted attention for the powerful technique, wide dynamic range, and ardent temperament he brings to Russian repertoire, as this Scriabin recital amply bears out. The various Poèmes are massively textured, generously pedaled, and generally quite spacious in relation to, say, Pascal Amoyel's chaster, more classically proportioned interpretations.

    Yet the brief and whimsical Op. 45 and Op. 51 pieces and the Fourth sonata's Prestissimo volando brilliantly show off the hair-trigger control and supple reflexes of Ghindin's fast playing. And even when considering how strident and monochromatic the engineering becomes in loud passages (to say nothing of the piano's inconsistently-held tuning), the multi-leveled color and sensuality characterizing Ghindin's Scriabin pianism still comes through; listen to the Eighth sonata's gorgeously-tapered trills, effortless double notes, and darting, ecstasy-inducing arpeggiated figures at different dynamic levels. Production issues aside, this is a masterful Scriabin disc, definitely worth checking out.
