In terms of their reputations, it is the misfortune of both Albinoni and Telemann that they shared their time and space with Vivaldi and Bach - respectively, the nonpareils of Venetian Baroque and Baroque everywhere else. Nonetheless, these oboe concerti of Albinoni testify to the considerable talents of the Red Priest's contemporaries. Three of the four concerti that begin CD1 (those in d, C and g) are probably the equals of anything that Vivaldi wrote for this instrument. They show the 51 year old composer (former dilettante now turned professional) at the height of his powers. Telemann's works on these discs, meanwhile - and especially the wonderful Sonata in g from 'Tafelmusik III' - show him at his most inspired.
But although Han de Vries is a leading oboist, and although Alma Musica Amsterdam play everything on these discs competently and worthily, the sound they generate is also conventional and limited. The recordings were made in the late 1970s and early 1980s and their age is now beginning to show. There is nothing exactly wrong with the sound, but the astonishing depth that you would now get from a high-quality recording of the Venice Baroque Orchestra (and indeed many modern ensembles) would reveal an immediate difference. When listening closely through headphones, it is possible to hear what may be a theorbo filling in the bass-line alongside the harpsichord, but it is the harpsichord alone that for the most part carries the burden. In an up to the minute recording, instruments like the theorbo would now be given much greater prominence. Consequently, much of the potential interest in listening to these outstanding concerti is lost.
Even so, this double CD offers outstanding value and, despite its thin bass, is more than adequately performed to show the heights these somewhat marginalized composers could reach in their writing for oboe.By Jon Chambers (Birmingham, England)
