Agnetha Fältskog is a Swedish pop singer, best known for being an original member of 70s superstars ABBA.Agnetha's love of music as a child led her to form a musical trio with two school friends called The Cambers. The group didn't last long, but Agnetha continued to write songs as she had been for most of her life. She left school to sing with a dance band and work part time as a telephone operator at a car dealership. After Agnetha passed out one day at work, her mother forced her to choose her job or her singing. Fortunately, Agnetha chose singing.
A short time later, one of the dance band's demo tapes ended up in the hands of Swedish talent scout Little Gerhard. He sent Agnetha to Stockholm where she recorded her first album at age 17. By January 1968, her first single, "Jag Var Sa Kar," was at #1 on the Swedish charts.
Her records continued to enjoy varying success. In 1969, after breaking off a short engagement to German songwriter Dietrich Zimmermann, Agnetha met Björn Ulvaeus while the pair were guests on a Swedish TV special. They were quickly engaged and through Björn, Agnetha met Benny Andersson and his girlfriend Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Both Björn and benny had been members of successful groups and Anni-Frid (or Frida) was a solo singer with a jazz band.
The two couples began working together on each other's albums, and by 1972, they recorded their first single together, forming a permanent group. Their first attempt at breaking outside the confines of Sweden were moderately successful in 1973. But Agnetha was more concerned with her role as a new mother to her daughter Linda.
Of course, in 1974, ABBA was born and exploded onto the world stage. But even as the group continued to develop, Agnetha continued to record her own material. Her final self penned album, 'Elva Kvinnor I Ett Hus' (or 'Eleven Women In One Building') was a critical and commercial smash in Sweden during 1975-76.
From there, Agnetha focused on ABBA and her family, which grew again in 1977 with the addition of Christian, her second child with Björn. A year later, Agnetha and Björn took the heartbreaking step of separating, announcing they were divorcing in 1979. That same year, Agnetha released a greatest hits collection with a brand new self penned single on it. But despite this apparent interest in restarting her solo career, Agnetha remained a member of ABBA.
ABBA dealt with the issue of Agnetha and Björn's divorce in a very professional way. The 1980 single "The Winner Takes It All" seemed to be about the split, though the couple and the group as a whole consistantly denied it. In late 1981, Agnetha released an album of Christmas songs with her daughter Linda, showing once again that she had ideas and plans of her own.
By 1982, ABBA was slowing down, and Agnetha took her shot at acting by appearing in a Swedish film. She restarted her solo singing career as well by starting work on song selections for her first English language solo LP. By the summer of 1983, the LP ('Wrap Your Arms Around Me') and the film ('Raskenstam') were released. Both were big hits in Sweden. The LP sold over 1 million copies after its international release. It was the biggest success of Agnetha's solo career yet, no doubt helped by ABBA's loyal fanbase.
For the rest of the 80's, Agnetha recorded two more solo albums (1985's 'Eyes Of A Woman' and 1987's 'I Stand Alone), another children's album (in 1987 with her son Christian) and made a few appearances on European television as well as a few TV specials. By mid 1988, she had no plans to perform again.
Since her divorce from Björn in 1979, Agnetha has been unfairly treated by the press, particularly in Sweden. She is often misunderstood and incorrectly labelled 'the new Greta Garbo' because of her desire for privacy.
In 1996, she released an autobiography that revealed little but firmly stated her position on her reputation, family, career and views of the world. That same year, a two disc set of her best work, entitled 'My Love, My Life,' was released. Agnetha became involved with an obsessed fan and eventually had him deported shortly before her 50th birthday in 2000.
Throughout the late 90's and into the early 00's, there were rumours of a new Agnetha album. In 2004, the delightful 'My Colouring Book' was released. It sold well all over the world. Agnetha filmed a televison special for international television. During filming, the other three ABBA members were in London for the 5th anniversary of the highly successful ABBA musical 'Mamma Mia!' and the 30th anniversary of ABBA's breakthrough at Eurovision in 1974. Agnetha was unable to attend, a fact that was no doubt aided by her dislike of travel. This move, for some fans, was hard to understand.
But in 2008, when the movie version of 'Mamma Mia!' premiered in Stockholm, Agnetha did show up and stand with the cast of the film and the other thre members of ABBA. In 2009, Agnetha and Frida appeared onstage together to accept a lifetime acheivement award for ABBA's work. She appears to be happy and finally comfortable in celebrating her success and acheivements.
