    Ohannes Tchekidjian was born in 1929. From 1951 to 1953, he was studying music at "Ecole Normale de Musique" in Paris. In 1961 he finished his post-graduate studies at the Istanbul Conservatory.

    Under his leadership, "Tchekidjian" choir was founded in Istanbul (1955-1961). During the same time (1958-1961) Maestro Tchekidjian was the Musical Director of Istanbul Opera Theatre and the Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the State Choir (1960-1961).

    He moved to Armenia in 1961 and since then, has been working with the Armenian State Academic Choir as its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, meanwhile directing the Yerevan Opera Theatre (1982-1987) and teaching at Yerevan Komitas Conservatory (since 1975). Under his leadership, the Choir has performed in 170 cities of the former USSR. It has had numerous performances abroad as well.

    Maestro Tchekidjian has directed over 60 former Soviet Union and foreign orchestras.

    Honored performer of the former USSR, Professor Tchekidjian has been awarded many state Armenian titles.

    The State Academic Choir of Armenia was formed in 1936. Since September 1961 Professor Ohannes Tchekidjian has been the permanent director and chief conductor of the Choir. Under the guidance of Mr. Tchekidjian the Choir has reached the highest level of performance and many time has been awarded numerous titles. The performance programme of the Choir is very rich and diverse. It would suffice to mention the fact that it sings in 27 languages. Its programme includes hundreds of largand small pieces performed in the original language of their creation: Requiems, Oratorios, Cantatas, Masses. Bach, Haendel, Mozart, Verdi, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Rossini, Wagner, Schubert, Bellini, Berlioz, Faure, Smetana, Menelson and many other works of international classical composers can be found in the Choir’s programme, and their performance has been accompanied by 55 symphony orchestres of the world, conducted by Ohannes Tchekidjian. The performance of the works of Armenian classical composers, notably, of Komitas, at the internationalstages have been qualified as "unsurpassed". Here the Palais des Congres, or La salle Pleyel, or the Theatre des Champs - Elysees of Paris should be mentioned, as well as London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. or the Westminster Method, Center Hall, the Salle Smetana of Prague, New - York’s Avery Fischer Hall, the Boston Symphony Hall, Detroit’s Orchestra Hall, Los Angeles’ Scottish Ride Auditorium, and many other celebrated concert halls all over the world.
