Snarky Puppy is a Brooklyn, New York-based instrumental fusion band led by bassist, composer and producer Michael League. Formed in Denton, Texas in 2004, the band features a collective of nearly 40 musicians, referred to as "The Fam" on their recordings and tours. The musicians perform on a variety of instruments including guitars, pianos, keyboards, woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings. Many of the current and former band members were once students at the University of North Texas.
The once Texan, now New York-based, Grammy award-winning quasi-collective Snarky Puppy has gone from the best-kept secret to one of the most respected names in instrumental music. Although still "underground" in many respects, the band has earned high praise from critical stalwarts like the BBC, Village Voice, Guardian, and Boston Herald, and has performed at some of the best venues and festivals in Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America.
The band has always used live performance as its chief form of evangelism, and maintains a more intense tour schedule than almost any band in the idiom. Over the course of 2013, Snarky Puppy gave almost 200 performances and workshops on four continents, including North Sea Jazz, Monterey Jazz Festival, Jazz á Vienne, Blue Note Tokyo, and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
Their most recent album, “Family Dinner - Volume One,” earned a Grammy for Best R&B Performance with featured guest Lalah Hathaway, as well as charting #1 on the ITUNES Jazz Charts.
Snarky Puppy seamlessly fuses a deep knowledge and respect for musical tradition with sonic and conceptual innovation in a way that is able to reach the most critical- or most carefree- audience. The convergence of musicians from white and black America (who also perform regularly with artists like Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kirk Franklin, Justin Timberlake, Roy Hargrove, and Marcus Miller among others), which occurred while the band was in its adolescence at the University of North Texas, has naturally established a system of balance that instantly draws listeners to the music- raw funk and sensitive dynamics, relentless pocket and lyrical melodicism, lush harmony and soulful simplicity, and most importantly, a delicate mixture of composition and improvisation.
The group is led by award-winning bassist/guitarist/composer/arranger Michael League, whose creative grass-roots approach to a tougher-than-ever industry has created a new model for independent artists. Snarky Puppy is a three-headed creature: first, and most obviously- an original music ensemble. Second- a production team and session band for individual artists. Third, and probably most importantly- Snarky Puppy is a group of musicians enthusiastically committed to music education and community outreach. Working with groups like ROAM (Roots Of American Music) in inner city Cleveland and the Music Lab at Jefferson Center in Roanoke, as well as giving clinics at hundreds of colleges, high schools, and middle schools worldwide, the band has made a strong commitment to spreading their love of music and general positivity to a young generation looking for something real to be inspired by.

With all of the press about economic woes, meteorological catastrophes, sleazy politics, and other calamities, the news can be overwhelmingly depressing. But artists have always found an outlet for transcending the blues through music. Enter Snarky Puppy to add some relief; a collective with over 25 players in regular rotation from Dallas and New York City, bringing a rotund sound of heady jazz, infectious funk and world music influences. One thing that resonates is the collective's ability to hold the groove line, as they say: "Music to move the brain and booty."
The key to the group's sound is found in its core members, who have performed with a who's who list of names: Snoop Dogg, Kirk Franklin, Kenny Garrett and YoYo Ma, to name a few. But it's the cohesive arrangements, strong playing, and approachability that have earned Snark Puppy's recognition. Recorded live in the front of a studio audience groundUP is the band's fourth release.
The music leaves a subtle imprint of diverse influences, with hues of Africa and cranked hip hop in "Binky," mixed with brass and synthesizers, or a Southern hard rock anthem with Derek Trucks-style slide guitar in "Minjor." The level of musicianship allows the group to shift gears in "Young Stuff," moving from swinging vamps and electronics to a slow stewed beat with a very funky electric solo reminiscent of polish violinist Michal Urbaniak.
While the pop glam of "Like A Light" shows the collective's sophistication, tunes such as the neo-soul of "Young Stuff" linger all the more with its slow jam tempo at the halfway mark with an expressive bass solo. The band doesn't mind getting dirty either, especially on "Quarter Master" which does New Orleans proud with horn shouts and raucous piano runs. The tightest track on groundUP is without a doubt "Bent Nails," with its smoking guitar riff, Tower of Power horns and a funky break that would make the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, smile. On March 8th, 2013, Snarky Puppy and a host of special guests convened at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke VA. The dream, envisioned by Michael League, was to record a series of live performances in audio and video that would bring attention and benefit to the ongoing work of the center. The Jefferson Center is a non-profit arts center that is revitalizing a key neighborhood in Roanoke with the restoration of Jefferson High Schooland the renovation of the Shaftman Performance Hall. the hal;l brings world class music to the local community through the Music Lab, providing education and recording space for local children.
As Snarky Puppy set up to record yet another live recording with the audience on the stage, special guests with an interest in supporting the project arrived. Lalah Hathaway, N'Dambi, Lucy Woodward, and Chantae Cann joined Malika Tirolien, Magda Giannikou, Shayna Steele and Tony Scherr in what was to become a legendary live session that celebrates the diversity and joy of live music. With the stunningly beautiful theater as a backdrop, the result is a masterpiece of Jazz, R&B, Gospel, and Blues music captured for the world to fully experience.

Since 2005 Snarky Puppy have had a studio audience present at every recording, most vividly captured on the simultaneously filmed DVDs of each album notably 2012’s breakthrough GroundUP and their recent Grammy winning Family Dinner Vol.1. If this squares the circle of bringing a certain frisson of in-concert energy to the often clinically dry studio, the fact that this band are exceptionally grooved-in after playing 1,000 gigs, Michael League’s Snarky Puppy take their levels of sophisticated textural layering and sheer groove prowess to new levels here. With no less than 20 players all breathing as one, the music – while still offering singable ways in to their melodic world – doesn’t shy away from lengthy solos or rhythmic complexity. Older hands may nod as they acknowledge the snap of Tower Of Power in the horns or Weather Report in the wide chordal shifts, yet Snarky’s energy and enthusiasm for recasting this afresh for their generation to embrace anew, free from histrionics, is only to be applauded. There’s variation aplenty too from the brooding Arabic rock of opener ‘Shofukan’, to the Led Zeppelin-via-P Funk-injected ‘What About Me’, and ‘Kite’s wide-angle horn arrangements. While this is all about the collective, drummer Larnell Lewis (who only stepped into record the album at the last minute) impressively powers the percussive vortex while keyboardist Corey Henry builds two extraordinary solos. In fact it’s Henry and the horn section that duel it out on the burning 5/4 finale ‘Lingus’ as percussion, keys solo and stabbing horn interjections face off in spectacular fashion. Dedicated to a certain Irish airline it’s a fittingly exultant touchdown for this highflying tour de force of an album. (Mike Flynn, Jazzwise Magazine)
