Straight from the onset of the Roaring Twenties, Vaughn de Leath, ‘The Original Radio Girl’. This honorary predicate refers to her being the first person ever to sing live in a radio studio (probably late 1919 or early 1920), although historians do not unanimously agree on that. Let’s say she was the first who sang live on the radio and became a star as a result. And not without reason: you’ll hear a pleasant contralto voice, which was originally a soprano; and as will become clear from this record, the girl could sing. She switched to a lower pitch when technicians asked her to spare the vacuum glass tubes in the microphones that were in use in those days; legend has it that these were frequently destroyed by the high notes produced by classically trained sopranos.
What stories to begin with! A star was born amidst the shards of shattered microphones…a veritable 20th century Venus Myth. Next, I’d like to recommend the first track, the title song “Ukulele Lady”, in which you’ll hear de Leath’s voice imitate a Hawaiian guitar in a most convincing way; and of course the famous “Are You Lonesome Tonight”, of which you may wonder if hers was the very rendition Elvis Presley heard when he decided to turn it into a mega-hit of his own.
