A Roberto Negro album is never something predictable or easily labeled; we had taken note of it a couple of years ago, listening to his piano alone, Kings and Bastards, we come back to observe it in his new work in which once again he puts together a very original, changeable and surprising work. He does so by expanding the already tested Dadada trio—with which he had published (Saison 3—) to a quartet, adding Valentin Ceccaldi's electric bass to his historic collaborators Emile Parisien on soprano sax and Michele Rabbia on drums and electronics, working on eight compositions of his own hand.Tracklist:
The musical situations are very diversified, interweaving a plurality of genres, sounds, atmospheres. This is announced by the opening track, "Lime," which begins with keyboard sounds masked by electronics, continues for a long time with the piano which narrates lyrical themes, and then slowly ripples in ever more distorted sonorities, until it explodes in a colorful magma, where the sounds of all the comrades converge, amalgamated by electronics. The following songs develop the concept in different ways from time to time, now focusing on one aspect, now on another.
"tOOt," for example, frames a splendid and lyrical narration by Parisien's soprano—today one of the instrument's finest interpreters—with a surreal edge of electronics punctuated by a fixed bass rhythm. A rhythm also taken up in "Apotheke," where, however, the variegations also come from keyboards and electronics, while Parisien intervenes nervously in a rhythmic way, as well as in the opening of "Neunzehn," which however changes repeatedly, until closing with an intense duo of soprano and Rabbia's drums.
Extremely evocative is instead "Missa," with Parisien still driven by the bass, but lyrical and almost "vocal" in its expressiveness, while the keyboards and electronics, also in this case, streak the background with unexpected colours. And lyrical is also "Telex," for the writer the highest moment of the work, opened by Negro on the piano and by the electric sounds that surround him, which continues in crescendo and soars thanks to the soprano, with Parisien showing all his qualities, until going overboard, flowing almost without interruption into the following "Neunzehn."
