From the new putumayo series "Putumayo World Beat", this delightful album explores funky new blends of Latin music, in which electronic beats, hip-hop flavors, DJ remixes and cutting-edge grooves are fused effortlessly with Colombian cumbia, Cuban son, Mexican banda, Spanish flamenco, Afro-Peruvian roots music and more. Enjoy upbeat grooves from established and rising stars of Latin pop, R&B and salsa.
As a label that issues world music compilations, Putumayo is wildly successful – 27 million albums and counting. They didn't get there way without doing serious market research about everything from curation and track selection to socio-economic indicators. With Putumayo Presents: Latin Beat (and its companion African Beat) it's easy to suss that they are serious about marketing to an internet-savvy, younger generation of listeners. These releases also marked the label's push toward digital marketing. Latin Beat contains a dozen tracks from recording artists who hail from Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, Spain, Germany, the U.K., the U.S., and New Zealand. The music ranges from more traditionally oriented son material à la "Guajira" from Britain's Grupo Lokito, to 21st century salsa extrapolations like "La Cumbia Lounge" from Charanga Cakewalk (U.S.) and "Pelo Shao" from Ecuador's Sarazino. Then there's the crazy IDM from Cuba's Moneda Dura, who use the voice of the deceased Cuban legend Ibrahim Ferrer on "Goza."
