Paal Nilssen-Love - New Brazilian Funk (2019)

“New Brazilian Funk” is the freshest release of “PNL Records” of 2019 – it will be released on 25, January. Album was recorded by Paal Nilssen-Love (drums & percussion), Felipe Zenicola (electric bass), Frode Gjerstad (alto saxophone), Kiko Dinucci (electric guitar) and Paulinho Bicolor (cuica). Quintet’s music is based on avant-garde and experimental jazz. Roots of 1960’s avant-garde jazz are gently combined with the newest tendencies and innovations of contemporary experimental music, funk, soft intonations of rock styles, modern jazz styles, cool, progressive, fusion and other contemporary jazz styles. This wide synthesis of styles helps musicians to create multi-colorful, universal and bright musical pattern. The musicians are main figures of international jazz scene – they had been improvising together with dozens of impressive and great jazz masters. Each of them is known as innovative improviser, who combines together expression, precise playing technique, emotional, suggestive and hot playing manner and sounds experiments. All together the musicians create bright, intense and evocative sound.

“New Brazilian Funk” is filled with energy, drive and passion. Inventive musical decisions, interesting and bright fusion of different styles, impressive collective improvisations and sparkling solos make driving and vivid sound. Each musician is improvising differently – huge variety of rhythms, chords, scales and moods are fused together. Avant-garde jazz contain the base of this album. Sparkling, turbulent, impressive and passionate collective improvisations are formed from individual melodies, colorful and spontaneous solos, sharp and aggressive harmony and dynamic rhythmic. Fusion, roxk, avant-rock, funk, bebop, post bop, hard bop, other modern and contemporary jazz styles, cool and abstract free improvisations make a wide spectre of colors, motions and styles. All the styles and genres are masterfully combined together – each element has its own place and genuinely fits to the musical pattern. Music is bright and vibrant. From the subtle, free and calm improvisations, subtle timbres, weird timbres music gets depressive and abandoned, ambient and deep, meditative and repetitive or – flies straightly to turbulent, vivid and impressive culminations. It’s impossible to predict where’s this music is going to get next – suprises, crazy ideas, exotic pairs or rare combos are very frequently heard all together. Musicians manage to collect together numerous of different styles, motions and characters – all of them are contrasting and gently get together at the same time. Melodic section is leaded by saxophone and electric guitar. Frode Gjerstad’s saxophone melodies are filled with hot spills, intense mood, turbulent culminations, growlinf, furious and aggressive blow outs, sparkling riffs, expressive, rapid and effective melodies and outrageous timbres. The contrasts are the key of his improvisations – shrieky tunes meet gentle and soft tunes, low and long repeated rhythms burst to the wild, speedy and breaking rhythmic sessions. Saxophone gives hot, expressive, effective and driving mood. It’s totally based on avant-garde jazz, influenced by some styles of modern jazz. Electric guitar is completely different – hard core, heavy and monotonic rhythmic base illustrate intense, vibrant and terrific solos. Abstract structure and open form meet the quadratic and strict structures. Kiko Dinucci’s improvisations are energetic,vibrant, electric and intense – it has driving, expressive and vivacious mood at the same time. Avant-garde jazz, experimental music and rock styles make the main stylistic combo. Electric bass by Felipe Zenicola is based on search of new timbres, experimental ways of playing and bright tunes. Deep and intense tunes are repeated many times silmunateously and form bright, intense and firm bass line. Vivid, bright and vivacious, or depressive, abandoned and deep – all kinds of tunes are used here to express different motions. Soft and gentle mood is against ambient tunes, strange timbres, gorgeous noises, electronics, modified timbres and other special effects. Electric bass forms beautiful and contrasting background, has effective and deep sound. Paulinho Bicolor cuica’s rhythms brings exotic and eclectic sound. This instrument is used as a coloristic effect. It makes cool, bright, vivid and exotic sound. Cuica’s free and dynamic improvisations are heard the most with drums and percussion – it makes gorgeous, interesting and rare combo. Drums section is leaded by Paal Nilssen-Love. Experienced, inventive and impressive drummer as always shows his best abilities and talent of improvising. He combines together rapid and furious riffs, hot spills, turbulent and aggressive culminations, franky solos, colorful timbres, home-made percussion instruments, specific playing techniques or completely crazy, bright and moving ideas. All kinds of rhythms and timbres are combined here – drummer joins together all the details and make intense, moody, dynamic and impressive rhythmic section. The music of this album has unique sound, incredible instrumentation, fascinating sound experiments and fantastic improvisations by each musician.
