Kenneth Radnofsky, alto saxophone, Angel Subero, bass trombone, Richard Svoboda, bassoon, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Gil Rose, conductor

Michael Gandolfi composes bright rhythmic and always interesting music. He has a witty sense of fun even while tackling themes of cosmic speculation, YK2, and Richard Feynman, perhaps because his musical origins are as rock guitarist. In this collection of recent works, he offers inventive music for three miscellaneous instruments of the classical orchestra. The most classical piece, with its standard three-movements, fast-slow-fast, is the concerto for bassoon, a dandy, colorful composition requiring virtuosity. Hence, Richard Svobada here is the soloist, a former principal of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and now at the New England Conservatory of Music. The other reed, alto saxophone, is performed by Kenneth Radnofsky, who already has performed over 70 works written for him. The four movements of the Fantasia brings together some extraordinary musical explorations: Rising Steps, well, rises in scale; Bolera, Scissors and Paste starts with a modal chaconne and ends with a series of chromatic tunes; the brief Recitative Surreale has a baroque structure; and Minimal Security overlays dark diatonic waves and a light impish dance. The first two tracks of the album constitutes From The Institutes of Groove, which features the bass trombone of Angel Subero, who has traveled the worlds of classical, Latin, and jazz. The first section, Too Jazz for Rock, is amusing because it is too classical for jazz! It is an exciting, atmospheric, rhythmic romp that blends the three musical styles. Rising on the Wing is a pulsing spiral of keys, ending at the next octave, that puts the slide of the trombone to good use in its glissandi. The orchestra is conducted by Gil Rose, who helped establish the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. In short, this charming Gandolfi album is groovy, man.

The more I hear of Michael Gandolfi’s music, the more impressed I am. He has a very personal style grounded in an engaging approach to harmony and rhythm, in particular which makes his music immediately accessible. The inspirations for his pieces are eclectic and fascinating and they seem like great fun to play as well as to listen to.

... he's warping tonality into an endless spiral of unstable harmonies, or just cramming a melody with unexpected chromatic turns. There's a joy to each movement here that's very much out in the open.

It is fun to compare this three wind concertos with recently shared concertos by Mathieu Lussier and Anders Koppel (see links below) - while all are disarmingly engaging and melodically appealing each one is reflecting different set of influences and sensibilities that are deftly incorporated in classical framework. There is no doubt that concerto genre is alive and well in 21st Century!
